Help with Musical

Featured Replies

I know most composers here are trying to write classical work, but I was hoping I could find someone that could give me some pointers on things I can do to help develop my understanding of the Broadway Musical and how that all works. I purchased a book called Writing the Broadway Musical which seems fairly helpful, but I am looking for other resources as well...maybe even a teacher or a series of films I can watch. I know that part of my studies will have to do with actually attending and watching the musicals and getting to know people in that field. Connections is a huge thing as well I have been told.

Any ideas or suggestions you might have would be very helpful. I was not sure if I should ask one of the tutors for help, or if I should just write it out and stick with whatever I do.

I have been working with some composers recently here in Tennessee so we will see where that takes me.

I hate to say this about anything, but the most efficient (notice i didn't say best...) thing to do if you're writing musicals is rip off pretty much anything even a bit obscure. It's not at all good musically, but this is a field where you have to make a LOT of music in not much time, so at some point your hand may be forced. It's not artistically fulfilling, but that's what it is.

I think you have some really good points there and I even noticed some people commenting on the "Disney feel" that my musical had at the premiere last month. So thank you!
