What's The Difference Between "view" And "download" In Uploaded Pieces?

What does it mean when one of your uploaded pieces is "downloaded" as against simply viewed? How can I download pieces? Is there that option? If not, then why does it give us a number of times downloaded for each of our pieces, as well as number of times viewed?
