Challenge: Duo's Second Voice

Featured Replies

Here's a simple and funny challenge: I've attached to this post some files of a Duo. However, there's only one voice of it, the oboe. The other voice must be created for each one who wants to enter the challenge.

There are 3 attachments:

1) a .mus file, if you want to open it directly on Finale (I don't have sibelius);

2) a .mid file, if you don't have finale and want to open the music to compose the second voice;

3) a ;pdf file, if any of the options above are possible and you STILL want to join this, hehe :P

Rules:

a) write the second voice without altering ANYTHING of the first. You are allowed to put dynamic marks ONLY, but you can't put more ornaments, articulations, agogic sings etc. (on your voice, you may do whatever you want).

b) the second instrument is totally free. It can be any ONE-STAFF MELODIC instrument. Ex: you can pick a violin, a flute, even timpani, but not piano, organ, guitar or xylophone.

Deadline: November 14th (2 weeks).

This time, I will pick a winner (if I believe there will be any). I can't offer anything as a prize, but the recognition of the good work.

Questions?

Duo.mus

Duo.mid

Duo.pdf

I'll do this! This looks fun.

Just a question: A violin is ALSO a harmonic instrument. Soooo...

Ok, it's ALSO a harmonic instrument.. but he's allowed here. You can use a solo string IF you don't treat it as a harmonic instrument. You can use double stops, but that's not the aim. This is supposed to be a 2-voice piece. Use double stops with caution.

Nope. Finale cannot save in Sib files.

Sibelius can read Finale files anyway can't it? At least I know Sibelius 7 can, not too sure about earlier versions.

To me this sounds like a two part project and proposal: 1) the second part may or can be counterpuntcal to the first part and 2) we must harmonixation the given theme. Count me in.

MusicXML is the way to convert one to the other format, as far as I know. At least from Fin->Sib

As for the challenge. This looks quite interesting.

Although I cannot imagine that these enharmonic spellings are the most logical in the end rest (B# as final note!) and low c db 16ths on the oboe that might be quite awkward, I am really interested to see what people come up with. I might give it a shot too, time permitting. (so probably not :) )

The awkward spelling is intentional. I want to see what people do with it^^ It's rather a provocation , hehe

The deadline is coming. Is anybody still interested in this challenge? I've seen no entries until now =/

Sadly, I have to leave now. :(

Well, as Stephen T. Buck is the only one who submitted an entry, I declare him the winner, ehhehe! In fact, I really liked his second voice addition and the dynamics he implemented. Congratulations^^
