July 26, 201312 yr Good Evening everyone. I'm an American living in Taipei with a sudden goal to write a symphony. I played in school concert bands and wind ensembles from grade school up to a high school, in quite a good wind ensemble (sax, clarinet, a little bassoon), but never really got serious about studying classical repertoire or theory until last year when I finally started taking piano lessons. Loving that, and it was kind of the impetus to all of the music theory study and everything I've done since last year. I'm hoping to keep learning and am taking the creative and learning processes very slowly and enjoying both. I will have beginner questions to ask and am looking forward to learning lots. I have about.... eight minutes of content on Musescore (that I consider part of the actual product; tons of other snippets of things and bits and pieces), and it's all fun and I'm happy with it, but it's a far cry from anything resembling a finished product. If nothing else, it's a nice personal project, although I should hope it will be more. See y'all 'round!
July 26, 201312 yr Welcome, we hope you stick around. As for your goal of writing a symphony, go for it. Study as much theory as you possibly can, but you'll learn a lot from actually composing too. You'll probably trash your first draft (and many others after that), so when you do, make sure you're learning WHY certain things work and WHY some do not. When you have those questions, we'll be here. Until then, happy composing. ;)
July 27, 201312 yr Author Thanks for the welcome. Just posted the most complete section of what I've got so far here. If nothing else, I'm enjoying the creative process. It's entertaining and educational. A nice hobby at least. That said, I still hope to produce something worthwhile and be able to hear it live at some point. Lots to learn.
