Howard Hanson, Symphony No. 2

Featured Replies

Has anyone else heard Howard Hanson's "Romantic" Symphony (No. 2)? I just heard it performed by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra on the radio the other day and I thought it was fantastic. Late Romantic style, but written in the 1930s. Unfortunately, the renderings that are available for free online seem to be by community orchestras and don't seem to be as polished.

I played the last movement of it a long time ago. It's interesting, but not the most well-written piece of music I've seen, though I must say I was quite the fan of it when performing it that time. Sounds very Korngold-ish to me.

Yeah, I thought it was film music as I tuned in, but it turned into one of those times where I sat in the driveway listening until the end of it. It turns out it was the basis for John Williams' score for E.T. (I had actually thought it might've been his music in the first place). Definitely not groundbreaking, but very aesthetically pleasing IMO

Hey! The Kansas City Symphony (the symphony orchestra of the town I am from) just performed this symphony a few weeks ago. The last movement is very cool.
