Here is a little piece I wrote about 6-7 months ago. Its a piece for Bb trumpet and Piano. I am afraid I do not have score for this.

It has a simple form, simple theme and a simple development !

This music is somewhat written by the more Jazz side of me. Most of the chords and progressions are jazzy. For example Poly Chords ( Ex: A maj7 over G major), Minor 9th's, minor 7th's and some more bunch of chords that I cannot recall right now.

The theme was simple as it could get. But I did try to explore the more possibilities that could be done with the material at hand. The scalic passages are nothing more than octatonic scales running up and down, to make it rhytmically more interesting I used diffirent note values for each instrument.

What else can I say... Instrumentation ? Well, I was a bit hard on the trumpet, I think its a bit difficult to play this. I had a workshop where they played this piece, the trumpet player was very good. So I am sure it is playable.

It's very cryptic... much like all your works that I have heard. How do you write in such a free form way? It lacks structure, I enjoyed a short tale much more.

Intensely atmospheric...very nice, dude. This sounds very free and spontaneous, do you improvise? This style reminds me slightly of Leos Janacek's chamber works, have you heard his music? Leos Janacek is one of my favorite composers

Yes I know Janacek. But I prefer his contemporary, Bohuslav Martinu :) . But I do not know many of Janaceks works. Only some of his operas. I think it was Katya Kabanova, If I am not wrong. It was very good.

I really enjoyed this. By now you may have noticed that I'm one of those guys that digs jazz and atonal stuff. This actually doesn't scream atonal, it's more like quickly moving tone centers. It reminds me a lot of Miles Davis' later stuff. I can't remember the name of the movie, but he did a soundtrack for a french film that was completely improvised. Even the drums and bass were totally improvised as they watched the movie on a big screen. This reminds me a bit of that. The different harmonic colors are great, you clearly know how to use those rich chords in good progressions. I think that trumpet part would indeed be really hard to play. The range is tough, and it is very disjunct in places. I think the first statement of the theme is a bit too disjunct for me, this sounds a little little a ballad, and I think the them should be just a little more lyrical. The development, however, becomes very lyrical and in fact very beautiful in spots. The diminshed scales (octatonic) work really well and provide a nice color. I use that a lot in my own improvising.

Hmmm, im not a good judge of atonal music, i know i liked the piano passage Bekri (i think thats what it was called) i cant say i really enjoyed this and I cant tell you how to make it better becasue im an atonal compsoer. The begginning was like whoa, but the middle was better and near the end was better, i think the piece gets better and better as it goes on, which is interesting becasue a lot of pieces here become worse and worse as they go on because people start to run out of ideas. When I listen to this I think of a lonely man walking down a deserted but thouroughly metropolitan street at 2:00 am. :w00t: In any case, I liked it more the second time I listen to it. The descending scales were annoying the first time but on a second listen, they were interesting and the part after that was very beautiful and IMO considerably better than the music before it. A well developed idea.

yes I agree. I am actually not composing pieces totally atona. What I do is, I pick the chords that I want and get them in the piece without thinking about classical harmony. Also my melodies are often not too atonal aswell.

As I said before, this piece has been performed in a workshop and the trumpet player played it exelent. Ofcourse he had some trouble in places but he told me that with some practice it is nothing too important. So I am quite relaxed on that matter.

I suspected that was the case. That's precisely how I compose as well! No wonder I liked your music! =D I actually find if one thinks about classical harmony too much you're going to use too many circle of fifths and thirds progressions, and too many dominant seventh preparations etc. those get annoyingly boring after a while, I like to spice things up by going anywhere from anywhere. Such changes can make just as much musical sense as normal diatonic stuff, in fact often more sense because it expresses something with startling color.
