Fanfare for Horn Trio

Ok, so this is one of my pieces. It's a short horn fanfare that I wrote for a local solo and ensemble festival. I'm new to this forum, but I'd appreciate your praise/critisizm.

The piece is written in a style that, at different points, reminded me of one of Mozart's minuets.

Warning: I'm going to get nitpicky.

You make use of many chords, but I'd be cautious about the dissonance that arises. I like the use of time signature changes, especially where the 7/8 is introduced. Listening and watching this piece, I can see that you enjoy more complicated rhythyms. One thing I would do is re-evaluate the rhythyms in this piece. Most are helpful and work well in the piece, but some of the faster rythyms 'clutter' the piece and make it difficult for easy listening (example: measures 46 and 47). I like the key signature changes throughout the piece- they help move it forward. The ending note is too short... I'd change it to a half note or even a dotted half note (especially at the tempo you've ordained, the quarter note makes the ending sound like it was hit over the head and knocked out while the ending note was being played :laugh: ).

Was this piece played at the festival, or didn't it work out? Anyway, you did a nice job of working with the three instruments- I find it very difficult to work with brass, but you did it nicely.

Hey, thanks for listening! No, Solo and Ensemble isn't until December, so I can still clean it up a bit until then. Yeah, I see what happened at measures 46 & 47; that's supposed to be a 3/4 measure but for some reason or another I left it as a 4/4 measure.

Overall, I like it. However, it seems a little too fast. The 16th notes aren't really coming out very well. The other thing I noticed is that it's vaguely reminiscent of the Hornpipe from Handel's Watermusic. If I'm not mistaken, the 1st horn part in bars 9, 15, 19 and 39 is identical to the first bar of the Hornpipe. I like what you did with it, but if that wasn't intentional, you might want to go back and look at it. I don't think I'm imagining it, but if someone could confirm that I'm actually hearing something, that would be nice. Here's a midi I found of the Hornpipe for reference:

Wow, it does kind of sound like Water Music, but I've never realized that until now! It most certainly was not intentional, but that's a phrase that I've based much of the piece on. Wow, I guess I should point this out to my director... Thanks for pointing it out, though.
