Haha... same here

Heheh. some "generous" human being might have "accidentaly installed" sibelius 3 on my "pc".

I buy it, but that is mostly because I hold myself up to a certain value. The fact is someone spent a lot of time and effort marketing, productiong, shipping the product. If you want something you ethier barter it, or buy it. Anything thing else is called stealing. Some people call it the victimless crime, but that doesn't make it okay in my opinion.

I have to agree. I've never felt good about pirating software. Not having enough money for something we want doesn't entitle us to steal it.

I agree--piracy is wrong. It is stealing. I do it anyway. So I'm a thief. Wanna arrest me? :P

you're right, lol.

it's almost stealing charging £600 for a piece of music software, but i suppose its our choice to buy it or not, and it is wrong to steal.

im a troubled artist. thats my excuse :P

Wow, is it really that bad in Serbia? :P

I almost feel bad for living in Norway..

Please tolerate us thievs.....

Look at this - Everyone i know from my contry (and i do mean EVERYONE) buys pirete CDs only. A new Finale 2005 is worth both of my parents monhly salaries put together. A new video game is worth my yearly pay. Poor people......

Very similar situation here in Mexico. I do believe piracy is wrong, but i also believe some kinds of software are way too expensive if you don't live in certain countries. I use Sibelius and the student edition is worth 3 months of my rent.

I could never use the excuse of being poor so that is why I steal. I grew up in Nicaragua(a rural village outside of our capital) and still managed to buy a 600 dollar guitar without stealing. Being poor is never an excuse to steal. Being the poor class, we can say to ourselves, "this is life and I need to do what i gotta do, so if crime will get me tfarther in life so be it", or you can say "I don't want to go against my values, so I rather work for what I want."

We can understand stealing food and water if you need it to live, but come on, this software is not vital to your life, now is it? Besides anyway can do it the old fashion way. Paper and pen :-p. It just takes some elbow grease and you'll get what you want one day.

Well, I believe that someone worked hard to make this stuff, and downloading it illegally shouldn't be done. However, if you can't afford something, is it so wrong to download something? None of the creators are losing money. Sure, then it cheats the richer, by making them pay for something others get for free, but they don't need it, their frikkin richer. My opinion is that if you don't hurt anyone, its not wrong, so, I don't think its wrong.

I don't download illegally though, cause I find others ways to afford things, and theirs not much I want.

Let's say 100 people download 100 copies of a software. Let's also say that the software cost 600 dollars. 100 people have jut stolen 60000 dollars from the company.

The reasoning software like finale and sibelius are expensive is because there isn't as big of a market for those programs. If you need a speciality software, it will cost more than a video game or other products that have more of a demand. It has always been like that.

When you download illegal, you waste the money spent on marketing, development, design, production, channel members, and retail. You don't only steal from the company but from many businesses which in turns robs their employees. As the product gets stolen more and more, then newer versions become worse. Reason for this is because 100 people just stole 60000 dollars that could've been used for marketing purposes. Part of marketing is research to find out what the users want in there program.

Sure you are not hurting anyone directly, but you can smash a window to an empty car and not hurt anyone directly.

I understand that downloading something from the internet can hurt buisness, but my way of thinking is coverd by a huge influence of culture.

For example, on some polinesian islands people think is tottaly ok to be naked all day every day. But if someone thinks like that in the middle of Britan or US, then they are crazy.

Same is here. I never even thought that downloading stuff from the internet can hurt somebody, and phisicaly that informatin can't be "inserted" into my mind, for the "social" reasons. I never stole a thing in my life in the real world. Onice i found a cell phone worht 250 euros at the time and just returned it to the rightful owner. But as for the computer world, i can't seem to put the information inside my head that i actually STOLE something. So in one way i'm not a thief and in anouther i am. Such is for all of the most petty thieves of the world - the don't steal because they enjoy stealing, but because they don't feel like they are doing anything wrong.

News flash: it's not the company you're hurting when you download small-market software like Finale or Sibelius. The number of copies that will sell is relatively small, so when you pirate the software, the company ends up thinking the market is even smaller than it is, and charges even more for the software. I believe that the fair market value of notation software is probably about half of the current price - I know of more people using pirated copies of Sibelius than purchased copies.

That's completely different... In the islands you mentionned, nobody is harmed by thins, cause nobody on the island considers it wrong, and its not effecting anyone in America or Britain. However, no matter where you live, SOMEONE is being damaged when you download this program illegally. It doesn't matter wether you personnaly consider is wrongdoing. Should terrorists be left to mass murder, with the exuse, "he doesn't consider it wrong?"

I'm not saying i'm innocent, i'm just saying why i did it. i am guilty, no doubt there, just trying to to explain as to why. for even terrorists should be looked at with a little humanity - as they have been raised to be terrorists.

That's true, but i don't agree with your guessing that value should be at least half. i know much, much more people that use legal software then pirated.

I think the industry need to realise that they're not going to stop piracy by including so-called "anti-piracy" measures in their products (which can normally be bypassed somehow). They are only going to stop it when they make the consumer realise that it damages the products.

my conscience is making me think about that program...

what's it called. finale notepad or somethin?

Edit: ok 8 staves sucks...

Yes, piracy is something you need to think about when creating a product lot of people use, like thinking about local burglaries commited in an area when opening your own store.

P.S. you have no idea how bad you made me feel about beeing pirate-y.... :)

Well myself, I am the somewhat proud owner of a few "special" copies of certain bundles of software, but I've never thought it to be all that big of a deal. The point is that you'll never catch all whose doing it, nor will you be able to stop hackers from bypassing security measures on software products.

And if you're going to pay $120 for something, you want to know that it'll be worth it for you. You can't just go into a computer store and try out different labels, you can't even buy/rent demo versions, so how else are you going to know whether it's what you need or not.

Piracy, I believe is just what a bunch of intelligent people did because they were fed up with industries and their policies. But that's just me.

I didn't mean to come across as someone who supports this kind of thing. I myself am in a band who's recently been trying to get recorded professionally. I know I certainly wouldn't want my music pirated.

And as for the "easy way out", sometimes it's the only way out if there's no place to buy that kind of program. What if it's been discontinued and therefore isn't sold anymore? Is it still stealing even though nobody's losing anything?
