Allegro assai for String Quartet

Featured Replies

Hi, here a classic piece por string quartet. I don't know how to classify it formwise...maybe someone can help me.

Any comments are welcome!

This is impressive Gulliem - as much the work as your adaptability towards 18th century forms. It seems characteristic of the string quartets of Vanhal and Dittersdorf. The harmony is sound, however there could be a greater degree if character in each of the parts, which is not easy to do.

I am interested to hear what your influences are. No work is truly original, and it might help us to compare your work with whatever your inspiration.

Until next time

The brackets are really messing with me, not sure why.

I think the work could use a little bit more variety -you seem to lock each part into a specific range. This isn't altogether bad -but it's a bit tiresome at times. One of the niceties of string quartet writing is the interplay and overlapping of the parts. Cello exploring it's highs and lows... first and second violins intertwining their parts... and the viola adding its distinct flair to the ensemble. Even in the works of the Roccoco composers, you get this tight exploration of the strings. This would've definitely made this a lot better.

At any rate, good work.

thanks for you comments guys!

@Markus Boyd    to be honest I didn't know of Vanhal and Dittersdorf. Looking for the period and how they sound like, fit pretty well in the classical style of Mozart and Haydn. I can't tell you were the influence come exactly from. I draft the piece 1 or 2 years ago, and finished last month.

@jawoodruff    you are right, it could be more interplaying of the roles between the parts.
