2 pieces for beginner

Featured Replies

Im sorry for spamming the piano forum. In future I'll group my compositions under one thread. These two pieces are for beginners.

I know it's probably not what you studied or what is appropriate formally for this kind of minuet that you're trying to emulate but to me it really sounded like your Minuet in Bb could have used a 2nd ending to change things up a bit before the first repeat.  The 2nd time around it sounds like the melody should end on the tonic - like in a period structure.  The 2nd ending in this case would qualify as the consequent phrase of the period.  That's just what it sounded like to me.  Overall nice job on these!

I think you're right, there's something quite off with the effect of the HC. It could be that I've used V7 or because of the parallel octaves. I've corrected it and maybe it is satisfactory, im undecided.

What I meant is that to me it sounds like (you don't have to change if you don't want to) the 2nd time around measure 7 should outline a V and measure 8 should be a tonic end to give the period an authentic cadence ending.

Thank you for your feedback, its been helpful. I was convinced the reason your ear expected a PAC was because the HC was ineffective so I looked to see what could be degrading the effect and so negate the need to swap cadence type. I sometimes prefer a HC in shorter pieces so that the PAC is reserved until the very end. It may be that for some melodies the continuation effection of a HC isn't desirable. I wonder how others would perceive the cadence.

I've made the version your ear expects and I think its better than the original.

There are also plenty of other things you can do to make the final authentic cadence sound more finished - you could change the dynamics or introduce a ritardando the 2nd time around or you could make the bass notes of the first authentic cadence more staccato to make it feel lighter - just to name a few options.  You don't have to change anything on my account of course.  (-:
