February 7, 20215 yr Another very short fugue I wrote after working through IJzerman's "Harmony, Counterpoint, Partimento", this one's in a kind of stile antico (the longer note values and more vocal style).
February 7, 20215 yr Very nice! Just a couple of points really: the oboe at the bottom of its range would be too clangy in comparison to the flute, which isn't that high in its range throughout. Perhaps a cor anglais instead, or simply a trio of reeds: oboe, cor anglais, and bassoon? The ending feels slighlty incomplete to me, since I expect it to resolve to Db major - the Ab in the bassoon resembles a dominant pedal instead of a tonic pedal to me, probably because of all the Gbs (with the sole G natural implying V/V to me). Otherwise, great job.
February 18, 20215 yr I would make this a 4 part if you can. Also, try to add more diminution so you can have more push in this fugue.
February 18, 20215 yr Your ending sounds like a half-cadence probably because of the Gb in the oboe near the end. To counteract that you could maybe get rid of that Gb and replace it with a G natural or end on a Db major chord after a short pause after your current last measure. That wouldn't be very traditional of your fugue to do that but it's a common macro-tonal scheme to have the keys of a piece roughly follow the format of an authentic cadence. Overall I think this is a pretty cool fugue although I wish you had a middle entry of the subject in a key other than the tonic or dominant although I like how you invert the subject in the second half. Your developmental episodes are also pretty well conceived and satisfyingly chromatic! Great job although I wish this were longer and you could bring more individuality to the construction of your subject.
August 27, 20214 yr Author Thank you all for your comments! I wrote this one along with the other I posted here more to see if I could write a fugue at all, hopefully I'll be back with more expanded and original stuff. Your criticism is greatly appreciated.
