first movement to a string quartet

I wrote this over the summer and finished this morning.

There isn't much in the midi in terms of dynamics, but the notes are fun. There's lots of Russian and French influence within it.

heheh, sort of... had i been writing more classical music i probably would have posted it, but everything i've been writing has been techno or videogame soundtrack stuff.

I loved this piece man, you really gotta get out of that corner. Cause this was good. I've always wanted to write a lengthy quartet that was mostly just plucking, now I know why I dont bother......cause some1named oh.......Jeff....ya jeff will probably do the same thing and put mine to shame.

I have to say this is definitly a style of music I like, and you do it so well!!(Dont let to much of this go to your head, I'm not exactly a musical genius myself)

I must ask did you just write this piece as it came to your head or did you have any particular forms in mind ?

The reason I ask this is because through the whole piece at every new chord key change or whatever I was expecting it to turn in to a totally different piece but you seemed to keep the piece within the realm that it started out as, it all seemed like it was going somewere and (To me anyway) every change sounded right to my ear.

Now either you didn't have any plan in mind and just wrote it out as it came to you (A method way to overused by myself) and your wondering what on earth is he talking about, :w00t:

Do you ever change theme?

In 5 minutes and 20 seconds it is about the same thing. Got kinda bored after 1 and a half so i skipped to check if you had changes anything, but no. Still the same staccato like thing.

Thanks for the response. Yeah, there's no real structural aspect behind it except for the beginning, and in the middle where it repeats the intro. I'm planning on using that theme later on in the piece. Basically I just wanted to try something like Rimsky-Korsakov did in Scheherazade: lots of one theme, yet different ways of putting it. It doesn't work too well when you don't use a full symphony to make the colors. Still though, it is an exercise in variability much like a theme and variation is.

This piece will definitely sound better with real musicians playing it. I'm planning on printing some parts and having the string quartet I play in read through it at least.

And, yes, the piece is very-very repetitive. It has potential, but...not in this form.

I don't mean to be nit picking here, but how did this piece qualify as a major work? No score and only a midi? Kind of annoys me that I had a substantial score to submit and no recording but got declined. Very strange.

look at the original date of posting. it was before the "new" rules for the MW forum.

as for your work being refused , take into consideration that anyone could post a massive score that was incredibly dirivitive or of poor quality, that without a recording no one would realize was either. I do believe you were asked to repost it once you had a recording, however?

Yes, a recording will be on its way, I was unaware of any new rules regarding this major works section so my mistake, it just frustrated me a little bit as I think scores can be studied without recordings, and are in fact beneficial when you consider how there are so many useful things to learn from a notation point of view etc, I thought perhaps my score would be suitable for people to view in the meantime whilst the recording is sorted out. I certainly think the work fulfills all other criteria. Anyway, maybe I was hasty in some respects but I think it is worth addressing.

I forgot to add actually that the when I look at someone else's uploaded composition I immediately switch off if there is no score included. I put that much higher than the recording in terms of the level of attention it gets so my rule is 'no score, no feedback'
