Featured Replies

I guess this could be for general discussion about anything Bach...... :D

To get the ball rolling, who here is familiar with the cantatas?

I am. But the last days I am kind of in love with this piece :D :

Ahh, the good ole WTC. Gsharp minor is a very beautiful one, it reminds me a lot of Eb minor. Ever hear that one? Its one of the few in the WTC with the subject in augmentation. And it's quite fun to play!

Oh that one, great too indeed. They all are of course ;-)

Try B-flat minor too. It has a 'hyper-stretto' in it.

But let's now discuss the cantatas, that's what you wanted after all :D!

Well I was just gonna ask about any favorites that come to mind?

Well 106 of course, the first that comes in mind. Especially the instrumental intro.

Further I am not that good with numbers :D Maybee just call a name...

  • Author

Wow, I don't think I've heard 106 yet. Give me a few minutes to catch up :D

  • Author

Haha, ohhh yess, Gottes Zeit! One of the earlier ones. (I'm good with the names not the numbers). Excellent choice!

What about 'Vergnugte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust'

I love the central aria of that one, with the organ solo. But as far as solo cantatas go, nothing tops Ich habe genung :D

My favourite is #78 ('We Hasten with Eager Footsteps', don't know whether there's another title for it). Darn it, I wish I could find a better recording of it than I have (a Canadian Brass arrangement).

  • Author

Hmmm, well lemme check it out. I have access to the Naxos Music Library, so i might be able to get a better recording (the sound quality might not be too hot though, I'd be recording streaming audio back through the computer). I'll see what I can do though :D

  • Author

Hmm are you sure its #78? 78 is Jesu, der du meine Seele. Is it a movement from that? Theres an aria (duet) thats pretty peppy from that, with a bouncy bass; and it so happens that I have a recording of brass of this one too. The original is so much better!

That's the one. Sorry - what I've got is really poorly labelled, I guess.

  • Author

Well, I do have a recording of, and its an amazing one at that, but its mono and only comes out of the left speaker! :D Would you still like it?

If you wouldn't mind, that'd be great. I've been looking for one for awhile now. I'll send you a PM with my email address. Thanks!

Are you guys talking about the immortal Soprano Alto duet "Wir eilen mit schwachen doch emzigen Schritten"? That's one of my favourites. I love how there are different layers of bass line in it, doddering along like a toddler.

  • Author

Yep, thats exactly it. The recording I found of it was amazing (Helmuth Rilling). Its so percusive, even the clicking of the organ adds to the feel of it.

Marisa, I sent it. Tell me if it works!

Brass?

* Evil Laugther! *

What about the inventions\inovations? They rock, especially no 2. Immensely beautifull! :D

  • Author

The inventions are great too. I need to track down the sheet music for those, as I have yet to play them. Everyone always thinks it odd that I never played the inventions when I love the WTC so. ;)

Haha, you think thats bizzare? Have you ever heard of the Swingle Singers and their Bach recordings?? Now that is bizzare (and very cool!)

Here's some samples:

Definitely listen to Disc 1, Track 4.

Really funny hehehe ;)

In Toronto? Here...

Bach Festival

I was recently able to acquire excellent recordings of the cantatas no. 1-47 and 103-150. Previously, I had never heard any of them before. I have only had a chance to listen to a few of them, but I like what I hear so far. Of those that I have heard, my favorite so far is no. 1. I especially like the 3rd movement (the soprano aria, or in my version the boy soprano aria).

Would those happen to be the Harnoncourt recordings?

Ahh, Helmuth Rilling! I don't have many recordings of his, but what I do have is quite good. That sounds like a good experience in Toronto (but sadly theres nooo way I'd be able to make it :P )

the boy soprano aria

Yeah, it's interesting - a lot of the early-music mavens will insist upon absolute authenticity in everything except that, substituting a female soprano for a boy. How Bach got boys to sing some of that stuff, I can't begin to imagine. Only the best-of-the-best boys can sing it nowadays. Of course, boys often went through puberty later then - Haydn's voice didn't change until he was 17, I believe - and a well-trained teenager could handle it better.
