El Lamento de La Anciana - Piano

Recommended Posts

Quite an enjoyable piece!  It did sound like a lament although I am unfamiliar with Gypsy music so can't really relate there.  The main theme was interesting and the 6/8 section was unique for its use of both the natural and flat 7th degrees in the bass - I don't think I've ever heard them juxtaposed the way you have here.  Is that some kind of Gypsy element to the music or just your own invention?  Your 6/8 section though, in the left hand especially, stressed the 3rd and 5th beats a bit too consistently to feel like it's really in 6/8 - felt more like 3/4 with an occasional hemiola to me.  The only way I can distinguish if this is a real performance or a rendering is by the character of the trills (which by the way the Eb in meas. 7 is staccato but in the recording it's trilled?).  It sounds beautiful and my guess is that it's a rendering albeit how great the sound of this piano is.  Great job!

Thanks for the review and kind words ... The composition structure comes solely from my own ideas ... sorry no Gypsy motif incorporated.  Once again thanks for catching the engraving issue.  If you are interested I have string quartet arrangement of the work too.   I am very pleased you are getting to know my compositional eclectic style(s).  I also see your point that the 6/8 feels more 3/4.

Andalusian cadence
"The Andalusian cadence is a term adopted from flamenco music for a chord progression comprising four chords descending stepwise—a iv-III-II-I progression with respect to the Phrygian mode or i–VII–VI–V progression with respect to the minor mode. It is otherwise known as the minor descending tetrachord."

Thanks for bringing this to my attention ... ~!
