Sequence / counterpoint help

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Been a while... I thought I could use peoples expertise on here for some guidance. I am revising a work of mine that I am entering into a competition and I have not been happy with this passage. I take issue with the A in the flute part. I applied a II7 chord here, although I don't think it works with the suspended E in the oboe part. Has anyone got suggestions on how to best harmonize principally the bassoon and oboe parts?

First of all,

The only problem that I hear is that the oboe sound that you're using seems to be dominating the ensemble dynamically speaking.  The flute can barely be heard when it comes in on that A - maybe it should be marked up a dynamic level?  I think sometimes things can sound wrong when they're played too timidly almost as if the performers aren't sure if what they're playing is right or not.  I don't see a problem with the suspension or any of the harmony however - I quite like it!  Hope that helps!

I agree with @PeterthePapercomPoserit's a dynamic issue, not a counterpoint one, the flute needs to be louder, and more contrast based on the timbre of the instruments.
