Symphony #1 in C - 1st movement

I agree that there is mainly a lot of exposition....which could potentially be very boring, but I thought it was well done; at least well done enough to be thoroughly enjoyable. A bit repetitive towards the end but overall very light and fun. I like the (as Nico said) slight twist on the Classical style, as well :P. A little more variety spread throughout the piece would definitely make it even better, though.

Anyway, great work :D!

It sound as if you are trying to write in a Sonata - Allegro style. I think from minute 4 to minute 7 is suposed to be the development section, while the last two minutes are recapitulation (modified) and coda. It is good that you are writing a classical style piece in a classical form. Sonata Allegor is one of the more challenging of the basic forms for people to display well. Having a good first theme and a good second theme strikes me as a reasonable expectation.

Your themes all blend into one another, at least to my ears. Now, I would like to point out that I enjoy your main theme that you introduce at the outset. It is charming, and the way in which you manipulate it throughout the development section is quite tasteful and interesting. The problem is that it is the only distinguishable theme in the entire work. You need a stronger second theme.

Now, the first four minutes of your work, if I am not mistaken, are 1st theme, 2nd theme, 1st theme, 2nd theme. You could probably remove the entire first two minutes of your piece, since the restatement of the opening theem at the 2 minute mark is precisely the same as it is in the beginning (I believe). In fact, elminating the repeated opening would tighten the work, and make it more interesting to the listener. We get to the good stuff, the actual development, more quickly that way.

Now, the coda I felt was also weak. During the entire last minute of the piece I kept thinking, "Oh, the ending is coming right up... okay, maybe it's coming up now... no, okay, maybe now... no..." and so forth. This is fine if the final ending you do use is even stronger. However, the cadences you employ never seem to gain in vitality, but they all exist on the same level of tension as the one before it. You can probably cut out half of your coda and the piece will be improved for it. Either that or have the ending material be more exciting than it is.

You have a good theme in this piece, no question about it. It just doens't quite fit at the length and treatment it has been given here. Keep at it though. This can definitely be enjoyable.
