G Flat Lydian Waltz (Working title)

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, this is a short waltz I composed. It doesn't have an official title yet.

Any suggestions/comments greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi @Aled Edwards,

First I really enjoy the key. Gb Lydian is so calm, serene and introspective, but that particular C natural adds some brightness to it. The opening melody is in the lower middle range around the middle C, and this makes the music very contemplative even though this is a waltz. Moments like 1:05 does remind me Chopin's waltzes, but yours here is less extravagant than his and I love it.

The middle minor section invites more harmonic change with chromatic notes which is a very nice contrast. Nice falling chromatic notes in the bass. When it reapprears, I am really afraid the piece would end in minor. Luckily it ends in Picardy third!!! Though I want the contemplative section to recapitulate once more at the end with some response to the challenge from the middle section!

I like this very much. Thx for sharing.

Henry

I like it a lot too. The modal touch gives it a little Satie flavor. It's very nice.

Thank you very much! Is the contemplative section supposed to recapitulate once more as part of the form?

No exactly for the formal issue, but I feel like the contemplative section is the main feature of your piece and you can re-confirm it at the end. But of course this is personal. Your treatment here will be more like the sixth Moment Musicaux of Schubert when he has that minor hinted at the end which is also great! But I love your contremplative section!! I think you can add some variation to the last reprise if you're going to do that!!

Ahh, that's interesting, I'll have a play around with and see what I come up with, thank you. I like the variation idea

This is indeed a lovely moody piece.  I enjoyed the unanticipated changes (teases) throughout the work.  My only suggestion is that I think you can further develop this endeavor.  There were many twists and turns which my ear expected to be developed a bit more. So I feel there much more potential to this sweet composition. Maybe also a bit more variation as you move towards the end.

Cheers Mark, I'll keep those suggestions in mind.
