The Cold of Winter

Layne

Recommended Posts

Hello! In my portion of the US we've been hit with some pretty hefty snow. As the snow fell last night, I decided to make a song to reflect it. As well as a little video accompaniment that I also filmed. I wanted to make something to reflect the cold and dreary snow as it fell in the darkness of night. This piece is for piano and string. The VSTs I used are LABS Glass Piano and Spitfire Audio's Intimate Strings. Hope you enjoy the video, song, and am looking forward to your feedback!

Hi! I love the variation you've accomplished here with only a few chords and the video fits quite well with it. Which came first, the music or the video?

Thank you so much!

Song came first, by about an hour and a half. Was inspired by watching the snowfall. This song is what came to mind...Then, around midnight, I went outside with my camera and took the footage that I envisioned while making the song. And edited it all together!

I could see this being played while I chisled the windshield-sized layer of ice off of my windshield today. Beautiful music 😄

The experience had occurred to me hours before, so the feeling is mutual! Must've also influenced this piece, haha! Thank you for listening!

Yup the music, visuals and movements go seamlessly and beautifully together and really tie up into one continuous over-arching narrative.

Thank you! Videos for my pieces are something I want to do more of because I'm a very visual composer. When making pieces, I visualize a scene in my head. Essentially working it like scoring...just to the scenes in my mind and not actual media (until a case like this where I make the video of what I imagined when writing it).

Hey @Layne,

I love the F minor used here to depict the winter just like Vivaldi’s Winter! The key is so chilling. The augmented chord of E, Ab and C is great. The music is indeed simple, but really achieve great effects with the opening hooking chords! Maybe it’s a modern 4 beat Chaconne! Thx for sharing!

Thank you so much, Henry! Glad you enjoyed the listen...it was fun to make! Happy to hear the effect worked for you. The goal of this song was to keep things simple. So glad that it was effective in both feeling and execution!
