Lurking for Symphonic Orchestra

Recommended Posts

I have come back to an old piece that I never quite finished. Since the start of this piece I have learned alot of valuable things that I will be bringing in the future. Some of the main things are about ranges and breath control of instruments and more importantly FORM. However much of this piece was before my understanding of form. But the piece in it's entirety is still something I'm proud of, with instruments often having independence, and no instrument falling victim of accompanying the whole time.

In the future I plan on making better use of texture, using the different timbre of instruments and more varied melodic ideas.

Hello @Some Guy That writes Music!

I listened casually and followed along with the score for the first couple of minutes and the thing that jumped out at me was that you stay diatonic to C major for a huge portion of the beginning before then changing the key signature to Ab major.  I'm sure you don't need me to remind you that not all chromaticism has to come from key signature changes and that staying diatonic to any given key for long swaths of time can get pretty tiresome quickly.  You could use chromatic neighbor tones or modal exchange where you borrow tones from the parallel minor/major mode.  There's lots of other methods to create more harmonic interest.  Thanks for sharing!

This is a beautiful piece @Some Guy That writes Music. I'm talking about key changing in my next video, and would like to demonstrate a portion of this (your modulation from C to Abmajor. The way you modulate this, in my opinion, does work. However you can still tell that the key change is abrupt. And it appears this was your intention.

If I demonstrate this I will put a positive spin on it because I actually do like the abrupt key change in this context. But I also feel this is a great way to demonstrate these types of key changes. Let me know!

Totally! You may use my piece in any way to help create an educational video.

The rendering in the beginning of the audio is somewhat muddled.  The balance among the strings and woodwinds is not distinct/clear.  So I found it somewhat difficult to appreciate your attempt here.  Maybe more dynamic markings etc. would help.  There are lots of lovely melodic heroic themes and the audio/rendering is clearer as your orchestration thins out.
