"Great job on organizing and hosting this great Halloween Challenge! I'm sure the video was a true labor of love!"

I have to post this now because I need time to collect submissions, then create the video.

The rules for this challenge are VERY simple:

  • This is not a "Music Jotter" challenge. Use your usual software.
  • Any instrumentation.
  • Length of piece doesn't matter. Just keep in mind for those who write long pieces, I can't audition the entire 20 minute piece 😅
  • Create something that reminds us of Halloween.
  • This goes up on YouTube!

I might rank the pieces from least scary to most scary, or least Halloween-like to most Halloween-like. Or, I might just talk about what elements make up this type of atmosphere. It depends on the types of submissions I get!

Due Date: October 1, 2024

Wait it’s August already! What am I doing in all those 7 months?

When is this challenge due?

Let's aim for October 1 or sooner. I need time to review all the works, then create the video.

I will certainly participate in this with my future"Distorted Thought 5". I will make it as scary and uncanny as possible. It will be a 5-6 minutes piano piece and I will provide you a recording.

Thanks for organizing this.

"Congratulations on your creepy and deceptive sounding Halloween submission! Well done!"

Hi all! Here is my submission for this challenge!

I tried to do something more grand and ominous, with some quirky strangeness in there too. Hope everyone enjoys!

I'll do it.

Welcome to the community @JohnElive1 and thank you for your submission! I love it!

@Jqh73o, @AngelCityOutlaw, @Ivan1791, as a reminder, we have 20 or so days left before I close this thread out since I have to set aside time to create the video. Also, if anyone else wants to join, you still have time.

Thank you for reminding me. In the end I won't participate, I decided to quit composition for a long while and try to start from scratch and hopefully find my artistic voice again.

"Very scary and ominous music you've presented here! Well done!"

saw this a little late, but still managed to get it in a couple days with something im happy with. definitely leaned into more of a scary atmosphere rather than a lighthearted scare that halloween probably merits, but im not good at that sort of stuff, so i thought i would lean into using orchestrational-ostinato to create a brooding atmosphere. hope you guys like it!

Thank you for your submissions! I'll keep this thread open for one more week but I'll probably begin creating the video sometime next week. If any of you have scores to accompany your submissions, please update and attach those to your posts. Its not required, but the more content I have for the video, the better.

I don't have a full score of it and don't have time to make a full one, but if there is a particular passage you want sheet music of for the video, I can make some of that.

Sure! If you don't mind, the part here, and 5 to 10 seconds in. I want to grab the violin and trumpet to show people how instruments can be used in unique and fun ways! If that's too complicated though, I'm ok with the first 5 bars or so, just so I have something to show.

Those effects are pre-record improvs that are harder to notate. The violin is just dragging your finger up the strings with no real target notes and the trumpet is just vaguely in time, vaguely on pitch fluttering on that one note and the flute is a strictly chromatic run.

I did however prepare the intro/main theme of the piece as sheet music and sent it over discord.

After all I will not be participating as I was not able to compose anything good enough to be sent to the challenge. Sorry for saying this so late. I was trying to compose something good but all of the compositions I wrote were just not good enough

@Jqh73o No worries, I will most likely start creating the video this week. And I will be locking down submissions starting now.

Is it dropping on Halloween?

  • Author

@AngelCityOutlaw, I'm aiming for a week before Halloween. I'm almost done with the video, and when I am, I will send emails out.

Here's the Halloween video for everyone to see!

Congratulations to all the participants on being featured in the video and on composing such great Halloween music!
