Beethoven and Bach but with a Jazz Trio

Featured Replies

Hello There,

It's been a while since I posted here but just wanted to share a few works I've been working on thus far

They are quite short and are meant to be pleasant + enjoyable; the works are based on themes by classical composers which may sound familiar.

Since I am dealing with a new idiom, I'd love feedback on my approach to jazz harmony and ensemble balance. Just giving a few general impressions should be fine

Thank you peeps.

Hello

I think these little works fulfill the function you mention (being enjoyable).
It's very nice the harmony in general, to me it sounds quite “idiomatic” as far as jazz is concerned.
Sometimes there are some chords that are a bit of a shock to my ear. In principle I am very open to harmonies of this type but for example in bar 10 of the first piece the resulting chord is a bit strange (F-Ab-Db-F-Bb-Eb-E)....
The sound of the double bass sometimes sounds a bit “dry”, but I think it's because of the virtual instrument.

Hello Luis, thank you truly for your reply. I am elated you enjoyed my work, especially since this has been an interesting project for me. I reckon Jazz uses a lot of minor ninths to give it that extra crunch, but perhaps that could be off putting at times. Definitely like to try out new sound samples with this piece, it is about time I upgrade my sound production.

Hey @Mooravioli!

I like this concept!  And I could easily hear the original melodies in the rendition!  I like the jazz trio idea of a jam improvisational jam session based on classical melodies.  Although I think it would be much better executed if you could get an actual jazz trio to play it live.  It's so hard to make jazz sound natural if you have to write out all the notes LoL.  Great job nonetheless!  Thanks for sharing.

Sorry for the late reply, Peter. I am glad to know you liked this, and hopefully this gets played by actual jazz players. It is too ironic to have to write everything out for jazz.

Thank you again for commenting.

Hey @Mooravioli,

I like these two music! It sounds so different with the famous Minuet in G arranged to a jazzy style. Honestly I don't recognize the Beethoven melody since it sounds so different from Beethoven, but I like it as well! My only complain is that I don't like the drum kit! I think it's a bit disturbing the cozy feeling of the pieces!

Thx for sharing!

Hey Henry, long time no see, happy to hear from you as always. These were originally meant to be solo pieces for piano but I ended up adding the doublebass and drums, in an effort "spice" things up. I don't recall both solo versions on Musescore but here is an audio to the second piece(piano solo version): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YybhwuMLZqaY29YAJJiRn-7UStDwPFHK/view?usp=sharing

I really like this version more than the version with double bass and drum! It sounds more contemplative here and even reminds me of Joe Hisaishi. I still don’t recall which Beethoven piece you quote from haha! Thx for the update!

Thanks again, Henry. The theme is actually from Beethoven's 6th symphony, specifically the last movement. You should definitely check it out, a beautiful piece; I think you'll like it.

I am quite familiar with the Symphony but until you told me do I recognise the theme!
