Post Deletion:

Members should be permitted to delete their own posts when they deem necessary.

This seems like a fair suggestion. It allows for the "bumping" problem, but 1) Sometimes bumping is convenient for urgency 2) I don't believe bumping will be that big of a deal, considering the amount of people that double post anyway 3) I have many posts that I would like to be able to delete if I could but lack the ability.

What do you think on this issue?

I would agree on members being able to soft delete their replies. That way the moderators could just restore the messages if the deletion makes anything seem out of context..

If a member can edit out the entire post, why not let them just delete it? To say it's allowable to edit a post at any time is the eact same as letting them delete, the only exception is that instead of the post being removed it's being changed to nothing. Essentially, allowing people to edit their post is allowing people to nullify their posts when they see fit. Allowing them to delete the post only serves to make the forums cleaner when that happens, instead of a relic of a post you just remove it.

Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines as JohnGalt when I read through this thread. Now that there's no edit time limit, there is no reason to keep members from deleting their posts, either.

I'll adjust the permissions accordingly. And Letehn, only moderators can physically remove (as opposed to soft-delete) posts.

Well the only difference between being able to edit an entire post and delete a post is the member's ability to copy their entire post, delete it, and make it again, thereby bumping the topic of the post.

I can honestly say that in 7 years of being subscribed to countless different forums, I've never once seen that happen.

A novel idea indeed. :)

However, considering that the software keeps a record of posts deleted by members/non-moderators, it would be very easy to spot something like this.

Lol, that's pretty straightforward Nico..

Hmm.. good question, Montpellier, I think that it may depending on the message board. I think I've once did that and the topic remained, but also somewhere else it deleted the topic. So in any case, I'm not really sure--it depends on the board. I'm sure it's only an inconvenience to the admins, but it does help members if they realize they made a post that doesn't really fit or doesn't make much sense.

Oh well, it's not really that big of a deal.

Your egotistic suggestion is by far too convenient and elusive.

Think before you speak, and if you shall make a mistake in the future, don't correct it, let rather your so called emotions get hurt and by doing so, your brain will internalize and remember such action.

Let me direct you to a thread that may or may not allow you to even start thinking about what has been posted above.

I suggest you listen to your own advice before jumping on someone else's case.
