Gothic Metal Instrumental

Featured Replies

Hello to you all.

My name is Nick Skog. I am the keyboadist for the Gothic/Black Metal Band "A Dark Fantasy". I have just joined this forum and will post a lot on here from now on. Here is the first composion I will submit, but there are loads more written that i will submit all in due time.(whenever I get them recorded). Anyway I wanted the opinions of those with a more "classical" minded approach to music, because that is what I am trying to write in our instrumentals. Of course all our songs have Piano becuase that is the style we are looking for) but our Instrumentals will feature all Non-Metal Instruments(No Guitar, Bass, or Drums). In otherwords our instrumentals are classical based)

Anyway I'm looking for any opinions and critism is always good. Tell me what you think, What is good, and What can be improved.

I look forward to hearing from you, and Hello again.

What an inspiring work of art. You use your rests in a brilliant fashion!

Sorry...Bad Mistake

especially for my first post ever. Anyway here it is...

YouTube - A Dark Fantasy-Lissome Lake

Having heard Gothic from people like Death In June, DCD, Siouxsie etc., I have only those to compare with so I'm probably not the best reviewer. To be honest, I found this heavy-going and unvarying. I can't recall the dynamics varying at all and the harmonic progression went nowhere, really. Apologies I can't be more positive so hopefully others who are closer to this genre may respond.

nice composition. It resembles Cage's "4'33". There was almost no sound whatsoever, in fact..there was no piece! Brilliant!

:P

Except it's 3'44" this time round!

I understand what you are saying. In all fairness though it is not really supposed to be progressing too much. It is only meant to be an i nterlude inbetween the songs which are quite heavy around them. Siouxsie is far from the music that we do. Siouxie is a Gothic Rock band and gothic metal bands are COMPLETELY different. I know it doesnt sound like so in the name but it is. Gothic Metal is meant to be Atmospheric, Romantic, and Classical and having an almost Victorian approach. That is what I believe it to be anyway. IF you are interested you should check out these Gothic Metal Bands.

I appriciate your review, but I'm sorry to say I don't fully understand it becuase I am not a proffesional musician and while I did reach up to grade 8 Piano in my younger years. I took a 5 year break from Piano before becoming interested in it again in the last couple years.

What does heavy going mean? and what are the harmonic progressions?

Any suggestions?

reminds me of sort of a Danzig, Black Aria. But a slightly lighter version.

I understand you desire for a "prelude" type quality to the piece, but how about adding some subtle texuring/layers to the backround it would create a really nice (and musically deep) river of sound for the listener while not compromising what you want artistically.

thanks for the listen

What exactly do you mean by texturing/layers??

can you give me any examples...

well you have a general sound you want...or chord lets say.

why not add layers of different instruments. Each playing a similar but slightly hocketed figure with varying dynamics. You can keep to the gernal structure of your chord or throw in a few non-chord tones and make the sounds a little richer.

make sense?

  • Author

lol not really...can you give me a quick example of what you mean...

my first chord is Ab Db E

my second chord is Ab B Eb

can you just give me any example of what you mean...like tell me what notes would give it an extra dynamic.

I'm sorry Im not very smart when it comes to music theory and stuff.

I couldnt give you any advice else it turn out to be my voice and not yours. Experiement with your keyboard.

The reason I called it Gothic Black Metal is because it is an instrumental in between our other Metal Songs. It is supposed to serve the purpose of atmosphere in between our more "Metal" songs. In essense it is an interlude.

What does homogenous mean?

Could you explain what it was about the part at 2:18 that was horrible. I'm not challenging you or anything, I'm just curious and I want to know your poin tof view on it. Which part in the middle drolls out? And what about the ending make sit horrible?

If you can please answer all my questions.

Thanks for replying!
