String Quartet in G minor

Featured Replies

This is the first movement of my String Quartet in G minor. It's a mixture of classical and romantic styles. It's a bit strange...

Please tell me what you think.

Thank you!

good start, i guess i can't rate your work, until i have the remaining movements.

a good starting for first movement

but as a listener (my harmony knowledge is very limited) i think the feeling you want to give is missing,

passion, love, hate, hunger... i dont know what's in your mind ;) ( i quess its romance but its my perception)

the intro is sounds good..until 18th measure it goes well

i like the change and mood in 30-36 measures

and my favorite part is outro ( the last 4 measures)

anyway

these are my ideas as a listener i hope they help

Schubert, how many movements does a String Quartet usually have? Just out of curiosity.

Oh my... (sorry these are short blips, but I am taking notes as I listen)

1. well your intro is ok. But, it doesn't flow with the rest of the piece. Also, you do flow it into the piece nicely. I mean you know where the intro stops and the main theme begins, but if you are not listening carefully you wouldn't know where it started. And, for this kind of piece, that is good.

2. You main theme is WAY too bland. "It is like listening to the prologue to a fashionable play before the complications begin."- George Bernard Shaw.

3. You need to put more dynamics into the first section. Really just put some dynamics in.

4. Listen to measure 35, it is weird. There is some strange accidental work. Look at those notes and see if that is what you wanted to do.

5. Really that is all through 35-37. Just for this kind of piece, you might want to rethink those tones...

6. GREAT SECTION!!!!- starting at measure 49 (or a little before) that section was awesome. I see what you are trying to do with this piece. I suggest going back to your first sections and try to make them flow as well as this section does.

7. 60-64... too much dissonance. The violin line and the cello line are contrasting, but in dissonance, try to contour them differently.

Good piece overall, I want to hear the other movements!

A String quartet usually has three movements. However, it's become convention to be the decision of the composer. Some Shostakovich string quartets have 6 movements.

Ahh, I see. I am also writing a string quartet. It is in three movements... I just couldn't remember the standard.

AHA! Actually, frequently played string quartets (classical/romantic) typically have 4 movements (1st movement- usually moderate to fast, sometimes a slow intro or other tempo changes throughout the piece; 2nd movement- slow, usually no faster than andante unless unconventional, often these movements are the most lyrical; 3rd movement- usually a dance: minuet, scherzo, waltz; 4th movement- usually a lively piece, often a rondo or sometimes variations on one theme). There are many quartets with a different number of movements, Shostakovich is a perfect example, we (my quartet) are playing 2 of his quartets each having 7 movements.

Now, about this piece; I feel at times it has minimal movement and could be improved by adding some melodys in the primarily half note and quarter note sections (m. 31 is a good example of such a place). Overall, the sound is very pleasant and I look forward to hearing the other movements of this quartet.

yeah, nowadays a string quartet could be anything... yes in the romantic and classic era it was 4 mov. usually in sonata form but we
