Piano sonata in one movement

Featured Replies

Here's my newest work for piano. There are several problems with this that I'm aware of. Firstly, it's sort of the same texture over and over, which was the feel I was aiming for (A Bach-ish invention sound). Secondly, the ending isn't very dramatic on the midi. I want a huge cluster chord (Using both arms) at the end, but I can't notate that on my program.

Tell me what you think.

Its a shame this hasn't been reviewed before. I enjoyed the folksy melody, reminds me of some thing like a Jig. I liked the continuous flow. Are you using modes? I thought the ending could have been more exciting, but good work overall.

I like the variations of the main theme.

it doesn't "feel" like a sonata to me. it's lacking a certain strength of material. however, notwithstanding that, it's still a very enjoyable musical idea.

things you could watch for:

1. returning too often on the same notes

2. at measure 165 that chromatic descent implied a move to a new key, and it was VERY disappointing when it did not come through

3. break the regularity of the rythme

4. thicken some of the textures.

I liked it. The rythym remided me of one of Gustav Holst's jigs. Watch out for those dissonances in the right hand part of measures 42-49. At first, I thought they were mistakes, because they appeared to be completly random. They ending was not very good. It didn't really bring out a closure to the piece. Why not add some tempo and dynamic changes at 4:17? Overall, it's a great piece. It has a nice and stable, continuous flow and a somewhat wide variety of chord progressions. Nice work.

Thanks guys.

The ending problem is mostely because the midi isn't very dramatic, but the texture issue is a big thing. I'm writing a sextet for strings and piano, an I'm making a point to vary the texture and instermental use.

I can't seem to use tempo changes with any skill. I think this is mostly because of minimalist influances :o.

I think I'm using modes for this piece. Usually, my pieces end up in a mode.

It's good to get some feedback.
