Violin Concerto 1st Movement

Featured Replies

Finaly, some time to reply, regarding the last movement.

I will (again) complaint very slightly about those few bars inthe middle where you go all classical again with some scales. Somehow this, simply, does not fit to the rest of your aesthetics. But, I promise, this is the last time I say that, I won't mention it again.

Other than that, for a last movement, I was hoping for something... more cheerful, but why not?

You are moving to rather romantic teritorries and I'm realyl fine with that.:) With a very fine underyilng more modern aesthetic, which works very well! At B, again it feels a little weird, at a Gminor chord, so obvious and the Eb, but it is a strange that my ears welcome, so no matter how theoritical I can get f*ck theories. It is lovely in the end!

It is, indeed, a masterful piece. Very well concieved, excellent played (in your head, not in the recording). But re: recording, you are lucky to have an orchestra playing your works :D

Well done my friend, well done!

Thanks Nikolas. I think it is important to keep in mind that the musical inspiration came from the July 7th bombings, so it felt like writing a final movement that was bright and happy would be inappropriate. I did in fact sketch an ending that was jubilant but it did not convey the hushed indifference I was looking for. I feel I really nailed that with the harmonics glistening over the held string chords at the end, because the pitches on the violin drift outside the harmony of the chord it has this aimless quality.

I do agree that the work is based around the romantic concerto aesthetic although funnily, I don't hear any hints of traditional classical harmony or even phrases at all. The only point where it uses formal harmony is in the big climax of the final movement where we get a perfect cadence for the first time into the big G minor theme.

Certainly my music now has become more dissonant, and in fact I think I will attempt to upload my new piece which was performed recently.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Hi Ryan.

I have to say that I think there is a real consistency of quality in all your work - regardless of the style you take on for an individual piece. Both in this (particularly the 2nd movement), and in the Chamber there are some incredible expressive and moving passages. Seriously.

Keep it up mate.

I listened to the first movement, and found it deeply moving, and very beautiful. I normally don't like modern music much at all, but this, I really really, enjoyed, presumably because you didn't feel the need to plaster it in dissonance! I will listen to the other movements sometime in the near future, but for now, consider me a fan :P

Beautiful. Really conveys a lot of emotion...

Thankyou for this beautiful piece of music!;)

Hey thanks for the comments. It is a more conservative piece of mine, although still quite modern if you look at the harmony. I am very proud of it still as a concert work.

Would love to write another concerto at some point, but it could be a fair few years before I get the chance.

It was nice of you Matt to mention the second movement which, although is not a great play through, still is a fun and expressive showpiece for everyone!

Thanks again!
