HELP

consider this a step forward from me, i have a piece, somewhat nocturne like, but i have no idea what to do with it, i can never develop pieces over more than 1 part, and im sure youve noticed, any suggestiosn on how to lengthen this would be much appreciated. it is in Bb minor btw, i think it's scales fit the human hand the best, thats why.

*note* the staccatos you hear aren't meant to be like that, i don't know why the midi plays it this way.

I think it's not that easy to realy give litteral ideas for a following piece. Some aspects you might want to consider. 1. How does the melody develop over the whole of the piece. Are there possibilities of taking parts of the melody and withhold them for later purpose or try to work towards a climax. For example the motive you use to end the piece with, might be used as the climax. So maybe you can place a part of wich that melody excists of, in your earlier melodies. It all centers around development.

2. what is the pupose of the piece, how do you want it to feel/sound like and how can you achieve that feeling best. This also has to do with development. You can, for example, play one note of the begin melody in a note outside of the ladder and latter on transpose to that key. There are so many possibilities of how to augment a piece or to make a following or preceding piece. Just take good notice of the development.

Must you do something with it?

Are your musical intutions telling you this piece must be longer, or are you looking at your minute-and-a-half nocturne and telling yourself that it has to be longer because nocturnes are not typically that short?

If you can't think of anything else to do with it, you need to seriously ask yourself if perhaps the piece is done. Then, and only then, if you've decided that it needs to be longer, perhaps the following comments will help.

Whether you realize it or not, there's actually a lot of development going on in this minute and a half. The harmonies are extremely varied, and your melody seems to grow into, and out of, itself, in varying combinations. This is good. If you feel that it's too short, I think this might actually be because the piece develops too fast. And this problem is something every young composer struggles with. We have a thousand ideas and try to cram about 998 of them into each new piece we do, when sometimes it's a much better idea to slow down, let things unfold at their own natural, easy pace. (Kind of like a good relationship! :-D) But no, we're young, we want to rush through everything.

I hope this gives you something to at least think about. I don't know if I would go back into this piece now and start trying to artificially lengthen it (musical Viagra?). It seems rather complete to me. I think the best idea for you would be to look at this piece again, understand where it develops at a good pace and where it goes too fast, and take your newfound knowledge to the next piece you write.

lol thanx for allthe advice, yes i just assumed becuase nocturnes are rarely shorter than 3 minutes. and by the way im hopeless at relationships :laugh:
