Cello concerto in Bb major

Featured Replies

This is a piece I wrote for a composing competition I am entering. It is a Cello concerto.

I only have two movements so far, I am currently working on the third.

Enjoy.

If you want to hear an mp3 version of this song go to beethovensheir's Xanga Site

It was made finale 07, do you have the latest notepad?

You can follow the link for audio.

Can you convert MUS file to Finale 06 or PDF format, not everybody have the last version of Finale.

Thanks

The first movement was good I thought but I also was disappointed by the range of notes you gave the solo cello, I was hoping that you would give it some more in the lower register and more in the higher range (I really like the higher notes of the cello). By doing this I thought you did the cello a little injustice in not letting it show off how capable in terms of range it was. I'm not saying this is a bad thing though, I still enjoyed it.

The second movement was very beautiful, but as with the first I didn't think you gave it enough in the high register and low register, mainly the high. I think it would suit the texture to have some high parts played on the cello. Once again not a bad thing, just a personal preference I guess. Still very nice.

I'm looking foward to hearing the third movement which I presume will be of a fast tempo and have an amazing cadenza that shows of the true capabilities of the cello.

Heya Beethovensheir!

I love the first movement of your concerto, it's very epic... reminds me of Dvorak and Beethoven a bit, and for a moment there sounded a bit like Ennio Morricone  but thats just my impression, hehe.

Anyways, i rather like the way you organize the themes and the orchestarization is cool, but the cello part could have been a wee bit more harder... just for the fun  It's great as it is, maybe you could give the cello just a bit more spice.

I'll hear the next movement carefully too soon! cya!

Congratulations! :D These are some fine pieces of music! Especially the second movement - I adore such lyrical passages in concertos. One tends to ignore the expressive potential inherent in such melodies, making them very demanding for the performer. (in other words, at last, a concerto I can play :P )

The harmony was pretty much static, but functional and beautiful. Very suitable for this kind of music. :D Very smooth modulations in the second movement from Bb to F and back again.

You should consider using the tenor clef when the violoncello moves too high (for ease of reading). Also, you should check the phrasing for the violoncello. I didn't see any marking for legato, detache, staccato etc. Such information could produce a more -professional- score and boost your chances for success at the competition. If you need any help, just ask.

This goes on my list of pieces-that-I-should-learn-to-perform. :D Excuse my poor English.
