Help me imporve my methods of orchestration~~Score and Mp3 included

Featured Replies

Okay, so I studied that GPO principals of orchestration and decided to use what I learned about string harmonies and doubling in this piece. Tell me if I did a good job or not and any extra advice you have to give. I would love to hear your two cents about it.

It's the piece titled orchestra practice.

A midi file has been posted on the second page.

more more naration music new orleans brass sounding thingy.MUS

Do follow any............harmonic structure?

The harmony's don't seam to fit. you need to figure out what chord your using, you can't just place random notes.

For instance if I'm in G major, my primary chords are G+ C+ D+ E-, your harmony's should move around these chords. Music is not left up to chance, never has a composer placed random notes on the page and the outcome be positive, you need to understand the way music works. I'm not sure how much music theory you have taken, but from listening to this piece it sounds like not very much.

Please don't take this the wrong way, I am honestly trying to help.

Random notes? eh...

They were not random notes.

What would you have done?

You might check your MP3 link...it didn't work for me, and I've never had trouble with SoundClick.

But I'll be back.

My apologies. The link has been fixed.

Thank you.

...Though this type of music isn't something I would generally listen to, and I don't really hear a melody in it, the orchestration seems pretty sound. So it seems you've accomplished your goal.

I look forward to hearing more of your work.

Sorry my apologies.

I was just trying to get across a point that music is for the listener, as A listener it wasn't enjoyable, I'm not saying you can't compose, that's not my place and I haven't heard anything else you have written so I can't judge that.

what would I have done? well I usually start with a chord structure that makes sense and a nice melody. You can listen to my stuff.

Well, the melody was in the piccolo. haha

Maybe it wasn't the best. Thank you for listening. Anyone else willing to share their two cents?

It seems like the orchestration is alright, I'm really no expert, but doubling is not something you always have to do, in the score, correct me if I'm wrong, I saw that the piccolo was always doing the exact same thing as the flute, this doesn't always have to happen, the flute and the piccolo, although double each other very often can also have independent roles. This also applies to every other instrument. Such as the trombones and the trumpets, I see that they are generally playing the same rhythms in your work, but that isn't always needed, it can be done but you can also have them playing alone or different rhythms at the same time. Typically though the first and second trumpet will play the same rhythms, as with the first and second trombones. Someone may disagree with any points I made, but thats just my two cents.

I'm not saying you did anything wrong, I believe you accomplished what you set out to do. Maybe if the work was longer then you could explore more techniques of orchestration.

I look foward to hearing more of your work.

Hi Dustin, thanks for sending file!

I have analyzed the 3 Powerful opening chords of your Orchestral piece.

Keep up with the good work!

Thank you for analyzing that! xD

Did you arrange that thing yourself? It seems a tad different. Any constructive criticism to add?

I did it because I found the tonal movement superb, and because of a boring comment that somebody gave you; "Do follow any............harmonic structure?

The harmony's don't seam to fit. you need to figure out what chord your using, you can't just place random notes".

Let me tell you a story about our friend Schubert who had a very bad self-confidence. At one point in his life (when he was famous), he felt that he wasn't good enough so he felt the need to start to read music theory. What a joke...!

As if he needed that.

Keep up with the good work!

Haha! SD = Subdominant of SS, SS = Subdominant of the subdominant of the Tonic. Really convoluted analysis you've got there :P. Couldn't they just be a borrowed chords (VI and VII from g-)?

Anyways, this is more of a technical thing, but refrain from using "modulation" on orchestral instruments. It's doesn't sound like vibrato at all, and makes everything sounds like donkey. There's also a bunch of really low notes in the first chord, which kinda screwed up my staff view. I can't really comment on much else as I could stand listening through more than a few bars. Sorry :(.

The midi sucks. Finale puts the modulation in there, not me. xD It can't be helped. Thanks for listening. I did post an mp3, though. Have you tried listening to that?

Hey,

After listening to the mp3 file all I can say is: could you post a pdf file of the score? Don't worry if this is too much of a hassle but I can't open the finale file and the mp3 file isn't clear enough.

Don't worry I just desperately want to encourage you after some harsh comments that have been left and a score would help me to do so.

Thanks!

How would I make this PDF file? >_<

This make be a stupid question but have never done it before...

Um...can't help ya there :(

you can download one of many pdf 'printers' for free, google it.

You then select it in Finale as your printer and it makes a pdf.

Fredrick, would it not have been simpler to call the SS a tonic with a dominant seventh? This makes more harmonic sense than a straight modulation to the subdominant with no preparation and going straight back to the tonic. Then the progression would just be I IV I7 I, which, I must add, is a damn cool prgression ;)
