Lullaby in D-flat Major

Featured Replies

Here's a simple, brief, melodic lullaby that I wrote off and on over a stretch of time. It involved a lot of picking over every single note and trying to figure out what worked best. A WARNING UPFRONT: The MIDI, as usual, doesn't do the piece justice at all. It ISN'T a difficult piece to play, so it would be more useful if you tried to play it yourself rather than listen to the MIDI. Just a suggestion for the pianists out there. Either way, if you could comment on it, that would be great.

TECHNIQUES USED: Harmonic and melodic voice leading and development, sparse piano writing.

TIME: It was worked on very sparingly for about half a year.

STRUCTURE: AABB form, with development going on throughout.

OBSTACLES: Finishing it.

SUMMARY: A cute, clever (I hope), and enjoyable (I hope) melody with some sweet harmonies.

A very nice lullaby. (But I did stay awake to hear it all!! Promise) I like the occasional harmonic twists - frexample, bar 16, the suspended 4th (RH) against the actual 3rd (LH). My only comment is the next to last bar where you have a double appggiatura resolving onto the D flat in the last bar. The appoggiatura sounds unduly paused. Would it sound better as a quarter-note/crotchet beat resolving straight onto the final chord with perhaps rall over the top? The pause could remain on the final chord.

bests,

Delicious harmony with nice use of dissonance. A lot of parallel motion which, sometimes, I feel does not compliment the piece (for example, measure 7). The second part was very cute and witty. Good work!

I quite liked the second part. It seemed to flow more than the opening. Overall I thought it was well put together and had a very innocent relaxing feel the way a lullaby should. However, there were a few subtle harmonic surprises to keep things interesting.

Very nice. I like your chord structures and use of dissonance. If I were to write a lullaby, I would have used more of a "rocking" feeling to it, but that's just me. But very nice.

Thanks for your comments everybody. They help so much, and it's so refreshing to see them.

I like the harmonies very much, good use of chromaticism. It isn't the most original idea - which is ok! I think context and uniqueness are not always more important than having a solid melody and harmony. Something about it reminds me of Schubert, but maybe that's just me. Like somebody else mentioned here, there are parts here with too much parallel motion, and without some complement in the left hand.

Otherwise good job, it's got potential to be a really nice piano piece with some other improvements, (imo) which are of course your decision at the end of the day.

In my music experiene this is the first pease i am giving for my student, ever i have't compose this type of music also this music leads rethym is acqureate, it makes me to live forever, this is the effect of the composition, Finaly i have give my appriciation to this very good composer.

hmm thats really nice, some parts are quite memorable like at 1:35, i just wished some of the bass notes earlier on were sustained for longer and not so disjointed so you get nicer harmonies.

good stuff :P

I really like it - but the odd pauses aren't very lullaby-like. In my opinion you need the continuous rocking back and forth of strong and weak beats to simulate the rocking back and forth of the cradle. Just adding a single note in those pauses might remedy it. I dunno - if you see what I mean then your own ideas will be far better than anything I can suggest.
