First ever attempt at writing music

Featured Replies

Aye,

This is my first attempt at writing any sort of music, I've not studied music or anything so I dont really know what I'm doing. I wrote this in Guitar Pro 5 over the last couple of days and I dunno where to go with it. It's sort of rock n roll (without a vocal melody at the moment).

Any thoughts / suggestions?

Also, what programs do you guys use?

For a first attempt, it's pretty good! I certainly wouldn't have been able to make something like this as a first shot...

The main thing so far would be variation - some of the sections move quite well, but there's also some bits where it sounds like there's not much point and it's aimless (probably feels like that when you're writing too, I know I get that feeling sometime!).

And a random suggestion, for the beginning, maybe try two bars before the percussion comes in, then another 2 bars for the next entrance? The beginning sounds rather rushed and hasty compared to the rest of the piece.

Oh, and I use Sibelius for composing.

Yep, right you are.

Lengthened out the intro and I think it sounds a bit nicer. Also changed the last chord of the second section from V to I, I think it helps the flow a little.

As for variation I'd like to add another section, but the two sections seem to flow reasonably well between each other, I'm not sure how I could implement a bridge like section. Also, it needs an outro I think.

Any ideas?

Yaaay! Yeah, it sounds nicer now x3

I'm not actually very familiar with this genre of music, so you'll need some actual experts to help you! And I'm new here too >__>;; Good luck with this piece!

Any ideas?

Definatly add a bridge, the easiest way is to combine the rythm and chords used in the chorus and verse. I'm not sure what chords you're using, I didn't look into it that deeply and my aural skills are pathetic (Altough it does sound like you're using the blues scale). As for rythm you could copy te theme from the verse piano and hold the first chord for two quarter notes instead of one. It may seem like a small difference but trust me it's effective. If you want to do something more varied, stop the piano and let the bass take over again, doing something similar to the intro. You should also repeat the verse and use a different instrument with a different melody (I'm not sure what instrument you used for that one but it kinda looks like a vocal melody in Midinotate), like a guitar solo or something, maybe Jazz Guitar.

this is exactly the kind of music that i wish i had made up myself. I'm trying to compose some sort of rock(-ish) song as well. keep it up and good work.

btw, i'm new here too

i like it! i was jamming to it... =) i wouldn't be able to create anything like that for my first attempt at composing music (i haven't composed anything yet). what program did you use to compose this?

I have guitar pro 5. Any chance of posting the score somewhere?

I think the most dominant notation programs we use are Finale and Sibelius.

This is a really good start. I like it, but it's still in the beginning stage so it needs just a few more things to make it more complete.

My suggestions are: Try to change the drum-line sometimes, 'cause it's repetitive and changing drums will give it more variation. And well, a melody...;)

That's all I can say right now. But I like the idea of this piece.:(
