Here is the final movement of my Cello concerto. I actually finished it about a week ago but haven't had much computer time.

The mp3 file and the finale file aren't exactly the same, The opening in the finale file has wood winds, Please tell me which you prefer.

I am also wondering if the woodwind parts in general are to spars.

and something about the length, I'm witting this concerto for a competition and the entire work had to be under ten minutes.

well take a listen or look and comment please.

Cello concerto in Bb major 3rd movement.MUS

I've already said I think this movement is great man, And since I've already commented on it elswhere, I'l let someone else do the Suggestions/Advice and what not...:D

Altogether a great Cello Concerto! :)

Personally, I feel that the cello part (the most important part, naturally) is too bland. There are very few hard passages in this work. In fact, the only things that would be moderately difficult would be sight reading the first scale. I feel that this piece sounds more like a solo for the section leader in a rather easy orchestral piece.

Other than the simple cello part, the orchestra written for well and I would not change it. But I know I wouldn't want to play the solo cello part unless you spice it up a bit.

Ok here's the updated version, I tried to make the cello part a bit harder. please tell me if you think it's better.

this doesn't give me the impression of a concerto. the 2 minutes i heard on audio xanga sound more like a romance or a short song. it lacks that magnitude which a concerto should have.

two comments with regard to your approach -

1. dont look towards others to tell you how to write your piece. decisions regarding woodwinds should be up to you, after all, who knows what you intend better than you?

2. don't make the cello part harder for the sake of difficulty. music that is purposely made technical without a musical validation is very easy to see through, and quickly sounds artificial. secondly, technicality is not about what's physically hard to play, but also what's emotionally hard to interpret and to convey.

if you're writing for a competition, then time is a factor, and send what you have. but if you want to consider this your own special work, you should put more thought into such compositional aspects. hope that helps.

If the only aspect of a concerto that is important, is how difficult the part is for whatever instrument is the center of the piece then I would agree with the others. However the need to show off should not matter. The idea behind the music is what counts. Sometimes a certain sound can explain what words cannot. Does this imply that the sound must be difficult to play? I think not. Granted, in most cases a concerto is just to show off the proficiecy of the player, this does not mean it has to be the overriding factor. Just my humble opinion.

And that's what the violoncello is about-its huge expressive potential.

The piece was a disappointment, after the gorgeous 2nd movement. :P The woodwinds are fine as they are. :)
