J.Br. Posted March 30, 2007 Share Posted March 30, 2007 I'm surprised some of you guys don't like the last movement of the ninth. It sums up the whole symphony! It starts at the very bottom: it is so sad! Despairing, really. Then, gradually, the basses and cellos build up and the rest of the orchestra comes in gradually and wow! Just wow! I also like the way the beginning rejects the other three movements: it's like it's saying, No: this is not the way to lead one's life! We must live in joy and happiness. I admit the movement is a little repetitive but it's brilliant and what he does with the theme is incredible. I recognize that this movement is the kind of music that you either love or detest. But, since I am a Beethoven Addict, I shall bring new life by saying that Karajan's recordings are NOT horrible. Though, the London Classical Players' recording is the best that I have heard. Each movement is very clear and they use period instruments and actual tempo markings. However, I do prefer the 4th mov of symph 5 a little faster than what they take it as. The strings have a deep, rich sound and the brass have a penetrating, yet majestic sound. The winds are full, but the flute is a little bit bright. You should definitely get this set.!
