Fantasia in C major

Featured Replies

Hello again,

Here is another piece. This one took me about 2 weeks to finish. I'm not gonna explain much about it, since i do not get much response anyway. I think it has to do with the fact that i don't post the notes. However i do like to share it. So listen to it and maybe you could still tell me what you think of it..

I think the biggest problem with this piece is a lack of direction. I felt like the melody really didn't take me anywhere and the harmonies were sometimes arbitrary and akward. Each section's ending also seems to be to disconnected from the next section's beginning.

My advice would be to reconnect the piece...there are some spots I did enjoy (particularly around 1:10...) that showed good thematic and harmonic development, but as a whole, this is more of a compilation of parts than a single piece.

Nice work. :(

I don't relate direction and purpose to a Fantasia as it's more of a free Spirited type work, so I wouldn't worry to much about it. It floats around as I would image a fantasia doing.

Thanks for these reactions guys!

I will explain the piece a bit now that i indeed did get some responses. Harmonicly (?) there is some directional intent. The piece starts in c major and ends with a guest for dm, although not very obvious. Instead of going to dm it goes to a major. a major turns into b major put i doesn't play the note cis. It then returns to c major where it finishes the hormony true dm. Then it goes back to b major thru a major and it plays a melody with a an melodic important cis there. So it was intented to give some relief in those ways.

for me it's quit difficult to make and forfill harmonic tension and relief witch is somewhat more obvious. It think this is because i know when this relief comes so i sort of prepare myself for it. Maybe some of you have some pointers in how to do this beter..

I thought it was very nice, very interesting to listen to, one thing that I thought was weird was where there was staccato, it sounded a little out of place and less flowing. Also, the ending didn't seem to fit with the piece but as a whole I thought it was pretty good :).

true about the freedom of the fantasia, but i feel there's a misinterpretation about my criticism...

when I said it lacked direction, I didn't mean it in the sense that it lacked direction towards a particular tonic, more like general melodic direction. Fluidity would probably be a more appropriate term.

If each of the sections had a little more cadence to each other, it would definitely help the listener. Just my opinion, I'm just a musician with a personal disposition like all of us :)

I think you're wright in saying that it lacks melodic fluidity. The melodies are sort submissive to the the harmonies. In one way this was ment this way, in onder to create contrast between the parts. On the other hand when i try to listen to the piece objectively, wich i always find rather hard to do, i indeed makes the piece a bit to incoherent. thanks for this pointer.

This is in many ways the Renaissance man's composition. Any few bars you isolate are likely to be beautiful, but overall everything doesn't quite seem to fit together properly. It's like a jigsaw puzzle of a beautiful picture that hasn't been put together correctly. Out of interest, did you map out the piece beforehand? Or assign any sort of structure? I know it's a Fantasia, but I'm still intrigued - usually fantasias have recurrent material and at least a vague sort of construction.

As I say, I liked bits of it, but the whole thing was slightly unsatisfying. The ending was quite funny. You suddenly decided you were writing a baroque organ fantasy! :s

Well zetetic, yes, the piece is a mixer of a whole lot of puzzle pieces. But maybe indeed of different puzzles. I haven't had any musical training whatsoever, so i still very much learning about harmony. I'm a fairly good improviser, but not a componist. I'm realy eager to learn it so i'm posting my pieces here. In order to get responses like yours. So thank you! In the time being i have learnt and discoverd somewhat more about harmony. But I'm still very much in development. Maybe someone has some helpfull tips, like articles or so. I'm using this forum to learn something from those who know more about it. So feel absolutly free to say anything about my posted pieces..
