Clarinet & String Orchestra

Featured Replies

Okay you guys, this is my very first composition ever, and so this is only the like 45 second introduction to the piece. I figure I better get feedback on this before going on, so I guess just tell me if the basic melody is workable, or if I should just scrap it.

Also, I don't know what's happening, but the midi file doesn't always play all of the parts, so I'm not sure what to do.

Okay, I've finished the piece now, but please I still need advice everyone!

It is entitled Lamentation for Clarinet and String Orchestra

Lamentation.MID

I thought it was pretty good compared to what I first made.

Well I stink at composing so almost any piece is better than my first but I liked what you had there, and I think you can get some very nice stuff done soon.

It sounds nice, a whole lot better than my first few peices. One complaint though, it sounds like the strings are in unison the entire time, this being your first composition it doesn't really mean much, but try and give the strings different rythms.

Hey there,

This a very good first piece. Sounds like incidental music and has a good sense of motion and development. Your harmonic progression is nice and the whole thing actually sounds pretty catchy.

On the negative side, as ditzley said, your strings suffer from a lack of rhythmic variety - they're always in unison with their parts. Add some variety, some counterpoint to spice things up a bit. The clarinet part is nice, but difficult in some parts and may require and experienced player to be able to breathe through it.

Overall a very nice first work. For future improvement, the thing to remember from this piece is the lack of rhythmic interest in the harmony.

Thanks for sharing :P
