It's No Great Loss - From Theatrical Production "Suzanne"

Featured Replies

Hey guys!

So I'm writing the music for a one-act play that a good friend of mine has written, called Suzanne, and I wanted to share some of the music with you.

This particular song is called "It's No Great Loss". Before you can understand the lyrics though, you need to know a bit about the play. Essentially, it follows the story of Suzanne; a single woman with a single son whom she does not love. She knows that she should and she really wants to love him, but she cannot bring herself to *truly* love him - she's a sociopath.

Here are the lyrics:

You are my only son,

My darling precious one,

Or at least that's what I'd say if my heart listened to me,

But when I see you there,

It's true I just don't care.

Oh well, it's no great loss.

Does it matter if I slam the door without a goodbye?

Will you notice if I fail to tuck you in late at night?

Why should it matter to you,

If I don't feel a thing?

Or maybe it just matters to me.

I should be kind and wise,

And try to empathize,

Or at least that's what my head says that a mother should feel,

And though I may be stone,

At least you're not alone,

You see? It's no great loss.

...Or could it be I fear,

That I may let you near?

...Who cares? It's no great loss!

And the Mp3: It's No Great Loss (With Vocal Line) - eSnips, share anything)

Please enjoy and let me know what you think of it! :)

P.S. Yes, for those of you who are observant, you will notice that the lyrics suggest it's the mother singing and yet the recording has male vocals. The reason for this is because I wanted them to be clearer and easier to hear for the performer who will actually end up singing this so that she can pick up the melodic line more easily. If I get a recording with her voice, I will post it.

I think it would fit perfectly.

Both the lyrics and music sound great. I'll wait to hear the version with the actual singer though.

i don't really have much in the way of criticism. I really liked the song, the lyrics seem to fit nicely but I'm not good at that stuff.

One more comment, I really want to hear it with the female vocals. :P

Wow, that was fantastic! I really like the cello part, and I think the mood of the song fits great with the....um.....interesting lyrics and storyline. I wish I had a friend to write songs like this for me, lol

The story and the song kind of reminded me of blackXmas. Poor Billy.

Thanks guys!

I'll try hard to get that recording with a real singer, but no promises...I need to find a singer as the one from the performance won't likely be available for recording and the performance won't be recorded since it's a fairly small project.

I actually get to write music for theatrical projects surprisingly often; it's a lot of fun and it means that I actually get to SEE my music being used for something. I highly recommend theatrical scoring for any of you interested in pursuing incidental composition.

Thank you for your comments!

Well, unfortunately, they weren't able to get me a recording of the live performance...so that's kind of sad. But apparently the audience really enjoyed it, so all is well :) Thanks for your support, guys!
