Ramblings of an old man

Featured Replies

This piece has a few runs that I use alot. I have fun playing piano like this. Again this is inputed thru Sibelius, so I know the score is a mess. There doesn't seem to be much posting in this section which is why I've posted a few in the last week. Hope someone likes it. It is just sitting down at the keyboard and letting my fingers go where they may.

Thank you. Just some improv.

lol Atonal music always confuses me. And this was no different, it sure confused the hell out of me with what you were trying to go for. So in that way, this really isn't much different from alot of the other atonal music I have heard. However, for some reason I enjoyed this piece more then I do alot of other atonal music. I don't know why, I just did. One of those things I guess I can't explain. I espically enjoyed it once I read it was all improv, considering I could never improvise anything this good (on any instrument) atonally. So you deserve praise for that. Keep up the good work.

Atonal music is harder to do sometimes. Even though it sometimes seems random, to be good it has to have structure. That aint easy, but it is fun.

Thanks

I checked this out, and I think this atonal stuff is growing on me. I especially like from bar 94 - onwards. I am curious as to how you go about improvising this, do you actually think about each note as you play it? (that isn't meant to be as mean as it sounds.) or do you just kind of play wherever your fingers go?

  • Author

I try to stay about 3 notes ahead of my fingers. If that makes sense. Sometimes, actually most of the time, it's more of what direction to go on the keyboard. Sometimes it is specific notes, other times general areas. Since posting this one, I have done a few more and added accompaniment to them. Now I am starting to be able to write this stuff and it scares me. But it is a lot of fun!!

Thanks for replying from "Downunder".

I guess this means you "didn't mind it as much":D

This definately has a comic feel and did make me laugh at some times. I think it was all the 16th note tuples, awkward pauses, and chromatic runs.

It does have it's tonal moments. Like in the runs near the last few bars. Or near the middle section where you have a somewhat pentatonic melody before it again decends into atonality.

Overall, I though this piece was quite humorous, especially the awkward pauses near the end.

KSP, Thanks for the listen,

Atonality to me is the expectation of one note that is substituted for another. We are getting more and more used to that so in some cases I try to do the same with pauses and the beats. You are the First to notice that.

I am also glad you see the humor in this. Most people who listen, often times mistake that emotion for others, some even going so far as hearing nothing but grief and despair.

This is not my best piece by far, as it was just a compiliation of ideas, not quite manic yet still disjointed in many ways.

Thanks again

I'm not sure I liked it... as a whole. I definitely liked pieces of it. And thanks for listening to mine.

Thoughts, with measures:

24: I really like the sustained chord that shows up about the middle of this measure. (The chord itself doesn't, but the notes leading up to it build the sustained sound.)

39: What sort of fingering do you use for these chromatic runs?

57: I like the brooding dark sound that starts out here.

81-82: The icicle effect is nice. (For lack of a better description.)

132: I like the start of that bass line with the rhythm that's roughly 1, 2 + 3

136: I like this hopping rhythm.

Anyway, no comments on form or structure, or suggestions for improvement, since I don't think that's even relevant.

Heh, the "icicle" run... I think that works as a name.

I like your honesty. Since it was just an improv, for the whole I like it. I wish I could tell you how the fingering was done but I just do n ot remember. I took a couple months of piano lessons when I was 10 or so and have been self taught ever since. So my teacher was ignorant of the right way to do things. For that reason, I can be pretty sure that the way I did it was wrong.

I like the name Icicle run. It fits perfectly.

Thanks for the listen

haha that was great! im gunna post some music like this once i figure out how to get my piano to work with my computer

Thank you. There are many ways to hook up your keyboard. Ask for help in one of the other forums and I am sure there are those who would love to help.

Rolifer!

This reminds me of stuff the pianists in my college's New Music Ensemble would perform. I would have liked a little more space in the texture, a little more mystery perhaps.

I loved it, it actually brought a huge smile to my face. :)

I posted this on another site and mostly got the exact opposite from what you described. You heard what I intended. But remember this was just an improv.

The people on the other site saw it as a discription of the ravages of time on the mind.

Dementia etc.

I tried to instill humour into my thought process. Thanks for picking up on that.

Ron

Humor is incredibly important to me in music, there's far too little of it out there!

sporadic and everywhere, i enjoyed it & i could envision quite well and enthusiastic old man rambling on about something. Between 3:40

This music really confuses me, and although it just seems to me like random notes on a page, this song, somehow, someway, I liked. I smiled towards the end, it's a very nice piece for atonal. I don't know much about this kind of music, nor have I heard alot of it, but I still liked this piece very much.
