Io

Featured Replies

This my first post of a work in a long time. Here is something that is extremely experimental. The next project out of the manic laboratories of nightfly.

The idea was to imagine and create a sound world that will resemble the environment on the planets. I ended up having 'Io' as my subject. I certainly did not imagine any aliens. Only natural hazards; strong winds, extremely hot heat waves, meteor collisions, volcanoes, pitch black darkness at night, cold and windy nights and desolated miles of open fields.

I don't know what you make out of this.

Admittedly, I didn't listen to the whole thing, I listened to the first 3-4 minutes or so. I really liked the atmosphere, but there wasn't anything particular to listen to and hold my attention, so my mind sort of wandered. This music would be awesome in a video game or a movie. I did like when you played with the (assumedly) backwards music and the balance between speakers. It created a very eerie setting.

I'm skipping ahead and there are some nice elements. Like when you have that choral synthesizer and put something tonal in the background; it's very nice.

Just wondering - how much time did you spend on this?

about two weeks. I admit that it might sound like it has been done quickly, but I did work on it quite some time.

I didn't think that it sounded like it was done quickly - quite the opposite, actually. There are a lot of intricacies that I appreciated, because a lot of other people just slop something together. Especially in this avant-garde section.

I agree with the above. Perhaps you should post this in incidental music and get the gamers opinions.

This is a very interesting work, and I've sat here listening through to the 37th minute with it going in the background. I plan to see the entire thing out.

What you've created is very much along the same lines as the output of a guy named Matthew Florianz (www.matthewflorianz.com). The genre is, I believe, generally classified as "Soundscape", which is an excellent term given what the music consists of.

So far, I can't really fault it. It's long-winded, yes. It's not something the average consumer would sit through, yes. But I very much enjoyed your craft and the effects you have managed to create. Thanks for sharing! ;)

I listened to about 15 minutes of it playing in the background, and I must say you build some great atmospheres and effects.

It is rather long winded though...

Your positive comments on this project gave me motivation to move on and complete the second episode of this insane journey. The next stop is Europa, the second of the four Galilean moons of Jupiter. I am too excited to start this next one. I am planning to use more tonality and create a chill-out or a new age sound with this one. However there will still be dissonance. Meanwhile please do post your ideas on how the next one should be. Like the places or effects you didn't think was effective on Io. This will help me a lot. thanks !

Ooh, so there'll be more?!?! :D

I liked pretty much all of Io, but then again I do tend to enjoy this kind of music. The concept of a fusion with Chill-Out and New Age is very exciting indeed!

Open fields on Io? Barley? Amber waves of grain? I jest.

I haven't claimed that they are on Io. I mean they were the kind of things I was picturing in my head while composing this. Besides no one needs an Astronomy lesson here.

Says the guy who implied that Io was a planet.

And yes, I do realize that you know that it's a moon (and one that makes me hungry).

Actual review pending.

Erm, the piece ain't working. Let me know when you fix it, or if I'm just an idiot and screwed something up.

I don't see the point of your arguments.

That was just a little joke. Carry on.

I updated the music with the Second Edit, which has minor fixes of balancing issues.

the link is now working.

This is pretty cool. The closest that I get to listening to this type of music is the random song or two that metal bands stick on their albums. To be honest, I have no idea how the hell you write this stuff, which makes it even cooler to me.

Cool picture, too.

I am still very curious for the reaction to this piece. This is one of the few times that I am doing such a work. And as you know, you can't really judge your own work as you have been working on it for a long time, you tend to like it. So.. please tell me what you think.

Hi Nightfly -

The link still doesn't seem to be working but I managed to access it here.

I'll tell you what I think about this. It's some proper f***ing sick sh*t (please excuse the language but I think it's appropriate). I love it. Dark, murky, and disturbing. I have a friend studying Sound Arts at LCC and he works on a lot of stuff like this. I think soundscape is a bit simplistic - to me this sort of thing is really an extension of 60s Stockhausenesque elektronische Musik.

Although it doesn't need it, I think it would be highly effective when experienced in combination with some kind of images - maybe you could work with someone on this...? That's what I would probably be looking to do if it was my piece.

Anyway I don't really think you need much praise - it's obvious from this and your other work that you know what sounds good.

Keep it up.

Matt

Although I have plans to give this to a friend of mine who is a recording engineer to make a proper mix on this, The idea of putting imagery to this music is wonderful. Even better, a 3D animation of some sort. I need to look out for people who would be interested. Thanks for that !

Life is a never ending lesson, we all need others opinions. I for myself can know what sounds good for me, but that might not mean that it sounds good to a whole lot of other people. Thanks for sharing your view on this. I never imagined I would get positive comments for this project.

EDIT: The link is now working

Yes, yes, yes!!!

That is a great idea, this would be amazing with some cool, psychedelic imagery!;)

Ok, how about a 5.1 mix of this music ? can you imagine yourself sitting in a dark room, and experiencing this in multi channel format? It would be nice. You guys are great, pushing my imagination.

;)

Oh, yes!!!

If you could do that, I would definately pay to hear/see it...

Although it is really rather long...

You say you're doing others? Maybe you could make them shorter and create visuals for a kind of suite thing... Sitting through a suite of thirty minute pieces would be kind of hard, lots of shorter pieces would give it a bit of variation...

The long length is what gives this piece the time to slowly develop and at the same time create an ambient atmosphere. It is meant to reflect imagery in the mind while listening. I had thought of making separate tracks of the whole, which would result more likely of people listening the whole but I would have sacrificed from the continuity and the whole big sound texture and ambiance.

Basically, I meant this piece to be a unique experience, but not a music to listen at the background or at the car (oh, the latter would be impossible anyway!)

If it wasn't the middle of the day, I'd have the lights off, presently. Just hit 12:00.
