2 voiced invention - question

Featured Replies

Hello, I stumbled on a problem during composing.

attached is a part of a 2 voiced invention.

In measure 31 there is 1 beat extra. (so 4/4 istead of 3/4) What ever I try, this is the most satisfying solution for me. It is not a modern composition but more baroque like.

Question: Do I break the rules?

There are no 'rules', but I believe no Baroque composer has ever done this. Since music theory is mostly the study of existing compositions, this would be equal to 'breaking the rules'. It sounds a little awkward as well. Since bar 32 is equal to bar 1, why don't you repeat the section?

(Also, it's not really an invention. Inventions are really about imitation between two voices.)

if i was composing this, i would make the 4/4 measure 3/4 - and make the quarter note "d" an eight note and go right in to the "c", since there is no need to stop the flow of the music just becuse you're going back to the original theme - maybe you could add a slight ritard or a breath mark if you want
