Moon Crush

Her'es a track I just finished that uses synthesizers with the Koto and Tabla.

It's a pretty chilled out track but with a quicker upbeat bridge.

21 views and not even a simple reply? :D

hey that was pretty cool... I liked the atmosphere of it. Nice and layed back.

Just wondering, what did you use to make it? like what synth plugins etc.

Anyways nice, I look forward to hearing more:thumbsup:

everyone's too busy replying to sonata's and symphonies... personal i love electric/ ambient music, simply fascinated by it. what stuff were you using to get the sounds, and how did you work the piece out, was it a beat or a groove idea first and then added a melody over top? sounds great, keep up the good work.

Well I used East West Quantum Leap RA for the Koto and Tabla, and I use Image Line's Sytrus for the synthesis. Sequenced in Cubase SX 3.1.1.

I started off with that beginning melody on the synth bell and progressed my composition from that.

The bridge is my favorite part, btw

And thanks for the comments!

You have a well thought out piece here. I like that in one beat of the music you make it tonal then slide atonally. That's a neat effect. I am not a huge fan of strictly electronic pieces, but I enjoyed this.

Damn, I caught myself tapping my foot to this. So I let it loop for a while. It becomes addictive.

i'm listening to it again, and i think if you can you should bring out the bass line a little more... you can never have too much bass ya know

Yeah, I totally agree... people who post orchestral stuff get lots of responses while people who post equally interesting stuff in avant garde/electronic get just some responses by the same people.

That was definitely...."Moony." I love acid jazz, which uses a lot of electronicish stuff, so I guess this was okay.

I thought it was kind of boring, at first, and it's not quite something I'd listen to on my mp3 palyer, but it has really nice, smooth, ambient, spacy feel to it. Overall, I liked it a lot, nice job!

There's a trick here, the trick is there's a trick. We must post orchestral silliness! When was the last time someone posted an avant-garde symphony?

Also: in response to the music. Pretty much what other people have said, it's not my bag, but I think you did a good job of it, very spacey and chill.

Is that a challenge!

On this music, it is very smooth and easy listening. At about 1 minute in I was expecting a new instrument, say a pan flute or a shakahachi, to come in with a melody up high - well, just my thoughts - you could make it longer by adding a melody and repeating. With a koto and tabla, it could be posted to the Jazz or even the Chamber Music thread, couldn't it?

I was trying to keep the ideas to a minimum, while providing a certain atmosphere. Overall I am pretty happy with this piece. Thanks to everyone for all of the positive comments,, much appreciated.

On the Jazz/Chamber Orchestra idea... I'm not so sure the koto and tablas are really associated with those genres?

Yes, your piece is very succesful in creating an atmosphere - I didn't mean to imply otherwise - always tricky to tell when adding more gives you less.

Hmmm, Eftos put his Amphetamin (which is 100% built on samples of other's music) into Orchestral and nobody complained. A koto is a standard Japanese instrument and a tabla is a standard Indian instrument - there is a lot of "fusion" music these days isn't there? The point being that fewer people look in the Avant-garde and Electronic thread (apparently) so a piece as musical as yours is could be posted to another thread to get more comments.

Oh well, not a big deal I guess. This piece has more of an electronic foundation than the others, so I felt it appropriate.

Is that a challenge! :)

Yes, and while I'm not very competent at writing for orchestra, I might have a go at this as well.

I have written just one short orchestral piece myself. I can try for a short movement of "orchestral silliness".

just out of cusriosity, did you sample the bass? and if so what did you use to sample it?

FYI, readers of this thread, I've posted "The Robot Aquarium" in the Orchestral thread so we will see what comments it draws :w00t:.

Nice soundworld, but when the prominent ostinato uses Ab, you should really move the bass down to Ab as well. It doesn't sit very well, otherwise. I actually did this myself in a piece I wrote a few years ago, and changed it a year after it was initially "finished".

I quite like the more energetic section that follows. I think you should consider using a more expansive tonal range throughout the piece, though - in sampled electronic music, where timbre is of utmost importance, you can produce some very nice variation in this regard simply by employing a variety of ranges in one voice.

Other than those quibbles, definitely on the right track. :w00t:

No it is a synth.

Nice work! Another FL user who uses Sytrus  Overall, I enjoyed the open, relaxing atmosphere the piece creates. Perhaps bring out the bass some more, as others have said.

I agree though, that adding too much may distort the "openess" of the piece.

Cool, thanks! I don't use FL though, only the standalone Sytrus VSTi from Image-Line. I may tweak the sounds a bit later on, when I am not so busy with school and my other two jobs.
