i like it. it sounds like busy streets. in a good way, not a disorganised hustle and bustle. hmm. i'm not making sense. it's good. i like muchly.

I had originally composed this piece going for an impressionistic style. . . it didn't quite work out. But still i am happy with the result. Rhapsody (still trying to work out a better name) is a relaxing and often modal piece. I am handing this in for my year 12 assessment so any constructive comments would, of course, be much appreciated. Thank you. it feels good to be back on YC, it's been a while. THanks again everybody. impressionism.sib rhapsody.mid

YEAH! Muse is good and radiohead is similar to muse and also has some interesting stuff. I don't have a problem with the essay, sure there are bits that i don't agree with but it's hard to avoid that with such a contrversial topic. There are many exceptions to your argument. (as in any argument) If you want an argument that nobody will object to try "Why i hate rap" then everyone will agree with you that rap is barely music.

I gave writing a fugue a shot but i'm not sure whether i did it right. Is a fugue meant to change key for every new phrase? I seem to be going through keys very quickly... anyway it's just a work in progress. Any help would be appreciated! :) harpsichord fugue.mid harpsichord.sib

i think of it as something that would be sung at a cathedral as a "chant" type thing i guess. oh yeah, i really hate the midi sound of the choir so i've put the SATB into harpsichord (but it's still intended to be sung by choir) comments? baroque choir harpsi.sib baroque choir harpsi.mid

BAHAHAHAHAA! my hero. actually i really like that tea. -
yeah it's pretty musical theatreish, musical theatre tells a story so is usually emotive. (i.e. makes people feel a certain way....then again most music does that) well anyway it's usually pretty flashy like this one, with the fast runs up the scale and the cymbals going. But i'm generalising, musical theatre isn't always like that. Les miserables has some of the most complex pieces of music i've ever heard. I like the piece. :)

whoa, sweeeeeet. panic really is the word for it, it feels like it is teetering on the edge of completely falling apart but manages to hold on. then when you get near the end there is a sound like a train coming (beep beep? honk honk? whatever...) and i was like OMG there's somebody on the tracks!! cos it's all so tension building and stressful. At the end when you get to that major chord i said "phew" outloud. None of the above is meant to say anything bad about the piece, i actually really like it. nice job!!

wow thanks to everybody! :)

if it sounds good to you, gives you a feeling of satisfaction from writing it, etc. then you have achieved your goal. If, then, somewhere along the way you discover some sort of musical element that will pioneer a new generation of music then that is a bonus. In my opinion we write music to what appeals to us and our ear, does it really matter if it takes us hundreds of years to change from the musical ways set by Bach and the other classical guru's? I'm sure to some people it is frustrating that many compose classical and only classical, but does it really matter? i say everybody is overanalysing it all (but interesting conversation anyway :) ) we will grow in our own time, our ears need to slowly adapt. If bach heard todays pop music what would he think?

i could say that i do that..... i'm not prodigy but thats just the way i write my music. I guess it comes from your influence, ie. you write music like the music you listen to. Correct me if i'm wrong but didn't jazz originate from uneducated slaves creating music. Because these people didn't have the knowledge about chords and such they created music entirely from emotion and managed to create the blues scale. These people didn't LEARN how to do it, they just picked it up... i believe that it is not nessecarily knowledge that makes a good composer. If we all composed using the methods that we knew that worked in the past then we would never move forewards... i guess in a way what i'm trying to say is that knowledge can be restrictive if we rely soley on it. If everybody wrote "cautiously" using only progressions and structures that worked than i'm sure the music would be nice enough, but nothing that would move us into the next generation of music. i'm realising that i've got a bit off track here...and i've forgotton what the point to all this was... errr

hehehehehheeee. is it possible....? i guess it must be. maybe lindberg.

hehehe to be perfectly honest the trombone is easier than it looks, i would like to pretend that it is incredibly difficult to play and i'm a genious because i can...but that's not the case. In some ways intonation is actually easier because with a small adjustment of the slide you can change the note to be perfect wheras when a valve is down it is down, no in between. i would go withthe trombone. and in terms of jazz (if thats your area) there are a lot of fun things to do with the slide.

i'm looking for a relatively challanging trombone piece to play for my end of year concert next year... i'm studying for my grade 8 trinity college exams (as an indicator of my skill level) I am currently tackling "Morceau Syphonique" by Guilmant and The David trombone concerto. But i also like to play jazz pieces... Maybe somebody out there has a suggestion for a piece i can play...something that i should be able to perfect in a year... (yeah, it's a long time) well thanks i guess.... :)

i totally agree. some of the most dramatic parts of music occur when the music undergoes a transition from major to minor or vice versa.
-
wow, i like it very much!!! i always want to write like that but can't. it's REALLY GOOD. :)

New guy here--question about composing and playing instruments
bloycey replied to Regicide's topic in Composers' Headquarters
i don't think it is neccessary as long as you have a reasonable ear for music. if you have a basic theory knowledge you should be ok. :) I compose everything by ear. and i think their ok (well i hope so anyway :P) good luck. -
i was attempting a "romantic" era style piece... what do you think? I realise that the piano part is quite basic... (i'm not a pianist) maybe somebody can suggest how to make it better..? romantic_trombnone.mid romantic_trombnone.sib

ok, i seriously need help with the ending of this piece. Overall, it's a rag, with a classical section in the middle, i'm just mucking around with 2 opposite styles to see what i can come up with. Anyway, after writing in ragtime, then classical, then ragtime again, i have no idea how to finish it. Please help me, i've got to get rid of the ridiculous "haunted house" sounding finish i have now. oh, btw, while writing the classical part of this piece the tune sounded vaguely familiar to me, although that may just be to my ears, i don't know. So if i've accidently dictated a random piece of classical music from the back of my head somewhere, please tell me!! i don't think i have though.... anyway, any advice would be appreciated. :) rag rag rag rag.mid rag rag rag rag.sib
