Hogwarts March - A Work in Progress

Featured Replies

Hey everybody!

My new composition is a march culminating 5 themes i have written representing Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and its 4 houses from Harry Potter.

Right now, I only have 2 themes written, the opening phrase, which will be recurrent, representing Hogwarts itself, and the lyrical Gryffindor march, which I only have the first instance of it comped out. As-is, the piece will then move into a reprise of the Gryffindor theme, then an alternate theme/transition that moves into the Hufflepuff theme.

I'm really excited about this one, and i hope you guys enjoy it and comment on it so i can make it better as it grows.

Thanks!

Alex

Hogwarts March (Incomplete): listen online

To be quite frank with you, I don't feel the Harry Potter-esque atmosphere. It, just doesn't sound like Hogwarts or HP at all.

I needs a more smooth and mysterious timbre.

I just wanted to tell you...

That there IS already a piece called HogWarts March

Composer is Patrick Doyle

=()

And if your planning on continueing with this ^_^ I would suggest you look into themes like "Hedwigs Theme" for Gryffindor.

Possibly...... a more odd/playful theme for Hufflepuff[weird name] mysterious theme for Ravenclaw and a OMGWTFAAHHHHHHHHHH theme for whatever one draco is in ^^

Thanks for all the ideas! BTW Saxophone-AlT, I already know about the Patrick Doyle one, lol! Anyways, I understand how you guys feel with it being a bit out of HP context. The themes I came up with I've been thinking about since I first read the books, so I'm trying to stay away from what Williams, Doyle, and Hooper have done, because it's my composition. I felt a march would be fitting because hogwarts is a school, and the house themes are based on the personality traits of the house members. I will indeed continue. Thanks!

It's an good score that's clearly filmesque, but for some reason it reminds me more of Star Trek than Harry Potter, because of the flattened seventh that you use to start the main theme - it's connotative and memorably unusual, but it's already been used, and once more as a movie theme. I'd consider changing that one section.

Musically, there's a weak unison (on C) about halfway through the extract you've supplied. Add an A or something, just so the listener doesn't have to guess the mode. . . mind you, if I'm hearing an A as part of the implied harmony, that mean's you've got a second inversion of F major, which is probably why it sounds slightly disruptive. If you mean F major, then put an F or A in the bass, and C in an alto or tenor line.

Other than that, good luck with the rest of the march!

I think this is great but... I've always imagined

Gryffindor- A Quick... yet mysterious melody on Trumpet (supposed to be brave, nerves)

Slytherin- A quick attack like theme dictated mainly by strings in their upper ranges (p.s. I'm thinking trills) (values cunning and ambition)

Ravenclaw- A slow comptemplative theme dictated by woodwinds and horn (values wit and intelligence

Hufflepuff- I've never thought about this house before but... probaly I guess sorta a well structured fanfare (values loyalty and fair play)
