Chris' Birthday Song...

RIGHT. Before we even get started here,

I KNOW THIS IS NOT A SONG AND IS IN FACT A PIECE. But I prefer Chris' Birthday Song to Chris' Birthday Piece..

Anyways..

OK. As the title states, this piece is for for friends up and comming 21st B'day. And so i wrote him this. I've been working on this for at least a month...maybe even more. And now, I want cristicisms. Because I want to improve it haha. Its goes for about 9:25, and has four main 'sections' if you will..

hahah it actually is now...so go listen!

-The opening is great

-You could make all the melodies come out more. Or add a legato melody over all of it in the brass. I think that owuld work really well.

-The pizz with the oboe answering is great!

-My favorite part is the part that sounds like Professor Umbridge's theme.

-The tuba is a little loud at parts.

-I LOVE the bassoon solo!!! Repeat it.

-The glockenspiel part sounds right out of the score for something. I almost don't want to type, it's so pretty I'm afraid I might break it. I will now pause for the beauty of this moment. OOO Oboe solo! I like it! Bring it out more! It's hard to play that quiet. The part after that is great!

-You've been listening to too much Hooper. You music is starting to osund like his! lol.

-The section after the glock. is awesome! Love the gong! After that pause, I think you should double the octave in the violins playing the melody.

-The ending theme sounds SO farmiliar. But I love it so MUCH!

-It needs to end with a bang. Try taking the opening theme and putting it at the end, accel., cresc., and bang! Finish!

Also, if you don't like "Chris's Birthday Song/Piece," what about Overture to a Birthday? (Dedicated to him)

Annddd thats a great idea for an ending, since that desending chromatic theme seems to be in there alot, why not end it with it? Hahaha good one!

Well, Matt... um... here's what I thought as I listened :laugh:

-beginning reminds me of matching ants

-then they go to war

-it's a food fight

-banana peels are involved

-flute is very random yet cool

-there is a falling over multi-layer cake

-it's going to crush them!

-it falls

-they escape and stealthily carry it off

-oboe rocks

-cake is being transported by long line of ant across dangerous terrain. it's steep.

-they wobble to and fro, carrying the cake down what seems like a steep, mountainous trail

-one ant is sneaky and is trying to steal some

-he tries to sneak off but beings to slip

-he falls down the side of the hill, about to bump into ther ants...

-DOMINO AFFECT!

-there's a big moving pile of ants and cake.

-they find dead comrads on the bottom of the pile

-they try to seperarate ant from cake

-some cake must be sacrificed

-they find themselves in strange, unknown territory and tentatively venture forwards

-it's dark and forest like. Probably tall grass.

-a foot appears

-RUUUUNNNNN!

-more feet, coming closer. Must escape.

-dodge the grass. run, jump, climb.

-I think we lost it. Who cares, keep going.

-Hey this is kind of fun... we should run from giant feet more

-GONG!

-running and dancing now. covered in preeety icing colours.

-feeling like adventurers. Let's ride that squirrel

-made it home, running through ant-hill tunnels

-to the queen! we're heroes for surviving but the threat is still very real!

-talking to queen lady. much to tell. new stories of dangerous feet and our daring escape.

The intro's cute, this is the second time I'm commenting on this, but the damn window closed so I'm in a bad mood now.

Not long after you start, you use chords that I love. The flute's cool.

oh, the part at 1:14 is fun, then it changes... oh. The pizz and oboe which comes next seems rather random to me.

At around 2:10, I think, the strings make me happy. But it too seems kind of random.

The xylophone part is so much fun.

3:30. BASSOON. It sounds like a wobbly elephant. I love it.

The celesta part next is very lovely. I love writing for celesta, but you're better at it than I. The whole part with the celesta is actually excellent.

ARE YOU SERIOUS, MY FIREFOX SHUT OFF AGAIN, good thing this time I can keep my comments. The part that precedes 6:00 is good, for the simple reason that it sounds kind of like a 'renewal' and it's right after a slow section. It's actually quite touching.

AHH, it's the intro over again! Cute.

You seem to enjoy writing jumpy string parts, the brass melody is cool. It gives the section a feeling of, 'we're almost done'.

The ending was disappointing. It was too abrupt. You probably could have gotten quieter, and end it with less of a bang.

I was on another site and someone posted a 'brithday song'. Later I saw yours and the idea that they were different never entered my mind. The one on the other site was just a variation of Happy Birthday, so I assumed that this one was as well. I am glad I have finally listened to this. I am highly impressed. For 15 years old this is something you should be very very proud of. A score would help a lot as previuosly stated.
