Little Adagio in G minor

Alright, I composed this when I was 11 (final part already at 12), and it's got a pretty amusing story: I got home from school, and I was kinda down. My Science teacher told me she was going to give me a B+ for that period because I forgot to give her this report I had to make on the transformation of elements in sugar (mega-boring). I made a few bars of this piece, and then stopped.

Some weeks later, I was REALLY mad at one of the kids in my class (I can't remember why, but I think it was because he hit me with a football or some other childish reason) and then I made the dissonant part of the piece, along with the harp scales coexisting with the violin chords.

The last part of the piece was written in the beginning of the Summer holidays, many months later, when I was happy: so far, the piece ends with A Major polyphony.

It's only three minutes in lenght, so I can call it a "Little" Adagio. However, I don't know if this is incomplete or not. Do you think I should use what I already wrote as an exposition and do Sonata Form, or should it remain as is, with the A Major ending and the three minutes of lenght?

Well it's not bad for a first composition, but the first part of it was quite boring and I thought it was a bit random at times. When you enter with the violin I thought things would change, and they changed. It got less boring but it got even more random and the strings accompaniment is a bit exaggerated in my opinion.

However from 1:28 I liked how the music sounded (even if it continues a bit random, it isn't boring). It's a good start so don't give up!

Yes, it IS random: I LOVE randomness and free form: Sonata Form can get a little boring SOMETIMES...

If there is something I HATE about Midi is the violin sound: it absolutely STINKS! Do you have Finale in your computer? If so, try importing the file into it and play it back with Finale's Human Playback: even altough extremely far from a real performance, it will definately sound better.

Well I guess you were right... It sounds completely different on finale... I should have guessed... any orchestral work should be in a mp3 instead of a midi so we can experience the same music as the composer.

I have two ways of making an MP3: one is with Finale, which you already heard. The other is at hamienet.com. The only problem is that strings absolutely SUCK at hamienet.com. Finale's mp3/wav file is better. However, I'm not sure it will fit this site's uploading restrictions.

Exactly: I don't know if I should do Sonata Form using this material as the exposition or not. Perhaps I'll wait for more comments on that.

Your little piece is really quite good. But there's no ending. Even though there's more than one idea here, I think their flow is natural, which is great. But aren't some parts too loud? Perhaps it's the midi.

I suggest that you develop it further. The theme's not bad at all. And while your ideas about randomness work very well here, I hope you won't take that to excess.

Everyone tells me that: I sometimes have violin classes with a young Dutch violinist called Daniel Rowland, and he's mesmerized by my English (it was actually a bit insulting... He said my English was better than my playing. :( )

I don't really understand it myself: I started to learn English by watching english cartoons with portuguese subtitles (from when I was 5) thus comparing both portuguese and english words, memorizing their meaning. I could say simple sentences when I was 6. Then I received my first computer and the internet became my tool for English grammar. This is all I can do at 12... Well, I was also startled about your knowledge of English.

I'm Portuguese (like M_is_D) and I think portuguese people can learn foreign languages very well, with less effort. That is quite noticeable in pronunciation. As the Portuguese language is very difficult and is very wide we can understand some languages very well (for instance, I can understand Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French well and I can understand a bit of Italian and Japanese). I think I speak almost fluently (well... some gramatical errors and misuse of words....) and I'm on level 7 for English at school (with 20/20 marks) but I achieved this knowledge, about level 5 (when I was 14). Seeing you with 12 and at that level (the same or even better than me) is almost terrifying :)

I don't know if you learned English as much as I did from the 'outside', but consider yourself a brilliant student if you learned it all from the classes: most sixteen year olds I know can't even speak PORTUGUESE correctly...
