There Is Truth To Be Found (in the small places of the world)

THE RECORDING IS HERE!

The Recording

A fantasia in miniature for flute and piano. World Premiere recording, from the recital Notes From Home, by flutist Trevor Patrick Watkin.

Program notes, by the performer:

"Commissioned especially for thei concert, "There Is Truth..." is what I imagine would have resulted had Copland spent a long weekend over at Schoenberg's house. Subtitled "Fantasia in Miniature," the flute spins fluid, sinuous lines over a polyrhythmic piano accompaniment that could just as easily have been scored for choir, given the presence of four distinct voices. Additionally, Dunn-Rankin makes winking references to the works of Varese and Mozart with the use of rapidly shifting dynamics and even a short cadenza, respectively.

In the composer's words: 'I've never been one of those composers who can trace the development of a piece in depth from start to finish. What I prefer to do is to ask myself questions as I go, and let subsequent measures answer the questions the previous bars bring up. Some questions are left unanswered, or the answers are delayed. In keeping with this compositional process, here are a few questions for a listener: Is the flute really the important instrument here? What is unsettling about the exchange between flute and piano? What is relaxing about it? What are the "small places" the title mentions? In such an unstable (social-political-linguistic-symbolic) environment, what is truth?'"

Wow! This is really great! Everything sounds better on a recording!

I totally agree.

Pretty enjoyable, but very short.

I enjoyed particularly the interaction between the instruments.

Thanks for posting.

Very impressive. Any chance for a peek at the score?

Man, that was just lovely (midi or samples would never have done this piece justice)! I, too, would be interested in seeing a score.

I'm in the process of transcribing my manuscript into Finale for posting. But I have other projects that I'm working for under deadline, so it's got to take a back burner. In the meantime, enjoy the pretty music.
