Mood, for French Horn and string trio

I see the different ideas, you have a noble feel, and then scherzo parts, a bit contrasting, exept if you're mocking a country!(or it's a folk song)

I would go for exiting rather than chaotic...

The instuments are chosen well, maybe string orchestra instead of trio, but you have to see how that works out in practice., if the 3 strings play loud enough, and the horn soft enough, then there will be no problem with only 3.

You could go for string quartet intead, but that would require lots of work to reconfigure. Can I think of any better instruments for the piece? No. Do I look up in excitement whenever a horn is mentioned? Yes. :)

I enjoyed the ensemble selection, but I agree that having it balance would be very difficult. I play horn and know how difficult it must be to balance with three strings and not overpower them, and let me tell you, your horn player will hate you for doing what you did. He or she will want to play out, but will then end up overpowering the strings, who would get frusterated because if they play any louder, they have to play differently and their tone quality will change as a result. The horn player will also be very unhappy because it is not easy to play particularly softly on any brass instrument. In conclusion to this rant, I would support the idea that the piece should be written for full string orchestra with a single horn. I would eliminate the balance problems somewhat and I think the sound of whole string sections playing the parts would fit the musical idea better. It doesn't really sound like a string trio type of piece to me, more like string orchestra or ensemble. That said, you may have to add a second violin part, especially considering I think the harmony is a little thin in places as it is.

I didn't really find the piece as exciting or chaotic, more like sad or remoarsefull with some happy or celebratory sounding moments.. If you look at measures 6 through 9, you might recognise a resemblance from the largo movement of Dvorak's Ninth (New World Symphonie). Was that intended, accidental, or subconscious? :D .

I particulary enjoyed the horn soloing around letter C. Very fun. A place where the horn player would love to play out, but would need a full orchestra to play the answer which would elsewise sound rather weak and wimpy. I'd love to see this section expanded upon some more.

Hmm.... why the minor second (D and Eb) in viola in measure 59? Doesn't fit the rest of the piece because it is the only time there is that type of dissonance.

Vivace at measure 29 reminds me strongly of the theme to the movie Twister. Ever heard of that? I think you have room to expand here as well.

Overall, I really liked the piece and the ideas in it. Due to the fact that the beginning and end were particularly sad, the whole piece come across as sad to me. Almost as if someone was very hurt, but hopefull. Parts like a letter B represent a tragidy, whilst the happier section, like before C, are the future hope or happiness in the past (like reminiscing). While the end as a sudden jerk back into reality; the sadness resultant of the the tragedy, which I can't spell. ;) Thinking back to what I said earlier, about the piece not being exciting or choatic at all, maybe I could consider it more chaotic, which I can't spell either. :)
