Hello everybody,

Im new to this forum and thought i'd start out by putting up my latest tune for you all to listen and comment to.

This song is one i worked on a couple of weeks ago and im not finished working with it yet, however, i deem it post-worthy.

I would love to hear what your opinions are about the song.

As you might hear, i am aiming for a soundtrack-feel to this song. As if it belonged in a movie or in a game.

You click on my thread, download my music but you say nothing of it. No reply? I didn't post this so i could give people free music. I want to grow as a musician, i want comments of my work, opinions, suggestions, so that i can learn more. But for some reason thats just too much to ask for?

I liked that percussion you used during the first third of the piece - sounded like some taiko drum or something like that. You definitely got that soundtrack feel to it.

Was that a live recording? And if not, what soundfont program do you use? I think I might be upgrading to Finale 2006 sometime soon, which means I get that Garritan Personal Orchestra thing, which sounds pretty good... I'm curious to know what you use.

Your name and your title to your piece looks like something from the book "Eragon" from the Inheritance Trilogy...Written by Christopher Paolini.

I'm sorry, I can't listen to your piece. I have dial-up and it will take an hour to download. You might want to consider submitting a finale or midi file.

Christopher Dunn-Rankin: I use the Sequencer Cubase together with the Samplings of East West Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra Gold.

Its a truly great package of samplings. And i did use the Taiko drums from another samplings package called StormDrum.

piano_player18: Im sorry but i don't have any midi-file available at the moment. And to make one i would have to assign each track their midi-instruments and stuff... that would take some time.

Anyways, if there are any more of you with decent bandwidth out there then dont hesitate to listen to my tune :)

I can't offer critisism because I am unexperienced at it, but I think the piece is wonderful! The intro really leads up to the battle. =)

First, your soundfonts are great! Mind me asking what they are?

Concerning the piece: I liked the build-up that occurred throughout the piece. The percussion and brass certainly add a sense of "battle" to the music. Furthermore, as I listened I certainly got the "soundtrack" feeling that you mentionned. I could easily see this being in a movie. That, generally speaking, doesn't make for the best concert-hall music, but I somehow don't get the feeling that that was your intention to begin with... I could very easily be wrong though.

Overall it is a great piece for which I have little criticism. Great job, keep up the good work! You have a bright future in front of you.

Great piece! I agree with cavatina that it is not something that would be concert hall material, however, I play a lot of video games, and I think that your piece would be great in a video game or movie! It is somewhat repetitive, that is why I say it would not be a good concert piece.

cavatina: Thanks for your reply, the sounds im using are Samplings from East West. They are called East West Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra. I use the Silver and Gold edition.

I also use East West Stormdrum wich comes with a nice selection of drums. I mostly use the japanese Taiko-drums from that library since they are my favorite. But there are other great drum-sounds in there from all over the world.

My main intention with my music is to make soundtracks. It doesn't have to be a soundtrack of something in particular rather than my imagination. But i also want to learn more about composing concert-hall music or classical if you will, since its basically the foundation of music in general.

Jen318tkd: Thanks! About the repetitiveness, im looking into learning more about motivic development in music. I believe i mentioned in a different thread that im looking to buy some books regarding this subject and what not. So if you by any chance know of any books i should concider, please dont hesitate to notify me :)

I liked the introduction. It sounded very original. It's not often that battle music begins with pizzicattos.

Then it happened. Those slow trombone chords. Heard that before, in countless soundtracks.

You could have made things just a little bit more interesting. Never just really on rhythmic changes to build interest.

Of course, it suits its purpose, as background music for a video game. I wouldn't say I thought it was brilliant, but it was decent.

why do you people shoot for originality? there's nothing wrong with imitating techniques. as long as you don't copy the music. from the way i see it, those who try to go for originality loses the quality of the music. we all learn by imitating. i'm sure you couldn't have picked up on how to speak all by yourself when you were a baby.

anyway, Frederik, this track is great. my respect to "sequencer-er's". it's the way to go. :thumbsup: although, i must say, i've listened to your three tracks, there's a lot of similarities in them. staccato strings, heavy percussion, legato strings in the back, and staccato brass. i'm not saying it's bad, it's awesome, i'm just saying that i won't get the wow factor next time if your next song appears to be in the same format. but good job.

I think the music is beautiful ! And I think it doesn't really care if it's completely originaly, it's good like this.

Very exciting. I like it! Excellent use of instrumentation and percussion. It is also very heroic.

Yes, it sounds like it could be used in a video game. ANd if this is what you were trying to accomplish, congratulations! But, if I were to go see this at a Symphony Orchestra or a Hall, I think I'd get bored pretty soon even though the piece is short. Why? Because not enough is happening. It is very repetitive which is why it would fare well in a game and also because of it's heroicness. To make this more like a piece of music though I would add some more form and more of a maint theme. In my opinion, an orchestral short should be something like this Main Theme, Development, Main theme. Of course you don't have too, but this is just to provide some form and some interest in the piece.

Yes, this would fit nicely into a computer game, so good job. I think you should remember my critisms though if you ever try to write something more serious.
