Duet for Piano and Flute

Featured Replies

Here we go again!

So, today I was bored and I was looking through the forums. And, I thought... why not write a musical piece today? I haven't in a while.

So, I did. I really didn't think about form, I didn't think about doing anything special. I really like how it turned out, though. It sounds really neo-classical to my ears, which is really my style. I also feel I poured some Bernstein into the rhythms. I hope you enjoy my Duet for Piano and Flute.

The intro just give me a smile, it's really cool! I like the rythms from like measure 74.

I wonder about one thing, in measure 82, there's a giant chord. How can a person play that? Do the person have to have three hands, or one giant hand or something :P? I think you can take move away the highest g in the left hand, the chord doesn't lose its effect. I think the chord comes a bit surprising, and I don't think it's meant to be surprising? It sounds very good with that chord, so I suggest you have the left hand piano two measures before 82 in octaves under the excisting note. I think that sounds more holistic.

Also, in the next last measure in the right hand piano, it can be difficult to play for people with small hands.

All in all, much interesting stuff. Yes, I certainly enjoyed it! ;)

I am aware of these two problems, and I fixed the first part to your suggestions (I thought that actually did sound better, thanks!). However, although the next to last measure, although hard I admit, is better to be left alone. I like the fullness of the chords there. I also tried changing it a multitude of ways, and I cannot find something better souding than what I have written.

What I think could be is, if the player could not possibly play it, I will write an ossia with the next best playability.

Well well, maybe I have a small appetite for dissonances, i hear alot of dissonances and the rythym is quite queer? hahaha.

=)

Well, dissonance is all fine and clear, and maybe now you see my dislike for chord structure, however did you enjoy the piece?

(800th post.. woo!)

What's up Morivou, (SORRY IT TOOK ME SO LONG TO RESPOND) Anyways, I liked your duet, the only thing I must say is that in the beginning seemed a bit off. Another thing, what form is your composition in, like sonata form, ABA or what?

It's a good piece, full of energy and very interesting, I just feel that in some places, the piano and flute interfere too much register-wise, making some parts a bit unclear.

This is really cool!

Thanks to you too!

Very pretty and beautiful, great interweaving of parts. Once again, I found myself enjoying your piano part better, almost as a standalone rather than the flute part! But regardless, it is a fantastic composition with a lot of dynamics!

No problem! I will upload one in a sec. Check!

Musically, I really enjoyed this piece. It's quite pretty, and the dissonances are quite crunchy and lovely.

There are, however, a couple of things I feel I should address. At 75, the piano part could be written out in a more easy-to-read way. (The beams should be organized in a more readable fashion.)

While the piece is certainly lovely, I feel that it could use some more specific articulation. This would mean, where do you want slurs? Where do you want staccatos? Accents? All there is really is a sort of melody, and as a wind instrument the articulation is very important. I was looking for legato markings but I only found one instance in the score; and it was used for phrasing. Which is the purpose, but I'd feel kind of uncomfortable having to tongue the entire piece.

Other than that, it sounds at times that the piece was actually written for piano and transcribed into flute. While you may show an appreciation for flute sound, I don't think that it's entirely idiomatic of the instrument. Not saying it's a bad thing, but perhaps something you may want to think about in the future.

All criticisms aside, I really enjoyed your piece! Especially the Bernstein-ian rhythms and the oh-so-lovely dissonance. Kudos to you!

This is the first thing I have written for Flute... and to be honest, it could easily say: C instrument. Don't you agree?
