Concerto for Harmonium & Orchestra

Featured Replies

Hi!

This is my first try in the concerto genre. Originally it intended to be a concerto for one soloist and different recorders but I later dropped the idea, and replaced recorder(s) with the harmonium. The composition started in April, and with long interruptions I was working on this since now.

It's in three movements (II and III attacca), the first in a modified concerto-sonata form, a second in a freer form: Largo - Scherzando - Largo (II) - Tempo I, the third is a crazy rondeau based on a theme which has it's root from the hungarian folk music.

Which I think should be verified is the orchestration, 'cause I'm just a hobby composer, but I'm also redy to other suggestions, too.

Normally I would pick apart your piece for orchestration and counterpoint issues, but those can be easily solved if you take a few lessons and read Forsyth or something like that.

But wow. This is music. Please keep composing more. The chorale in the middle of the second movement was absolutely superbly constructed (although in performance could it go a bit faster? Not much, just a little), and although some of the harmonies you used were rather elementary, you made up for them with some brilliant textural touches.

Thanks for the nice words.

For the tempo: I'll look after it, but I think it's not to slow, 'cause it should be played very meditative... But I dunno.

Really nice piece, as an hobby composer you did a really good job, and I would like to thank you, because before I heard this piece I didn't know what a harmonium was. People learn new things every day, thanks to forums like these and people like you. :)

I'm impressed, of course you don't have to impress me, impress the mods!

The first mov. began in a fanfare, this is pleasing, I liked it. The largo was good as well, the ending would be fun to conduct sounds cool, thanks for posting!
