What is a great piano solo?

For school i have to play a peice that has been in some kind of media, eg a peice from a movie but i'm not sure what to play. I know there is a lot of great rag peices but i've played alot of them lately aswell as classical, so i am looking for something kinda different.

any suggestions would be much appreciated!:D

The Forrest Gump theme is quite nice

you have to perform it yourself? or just present a recording of it?

Hmm.. Right off the top of my head, I can suggest the Forrest Gump theme like Will said. The soundtrack for Amelie by Yann Tiersen, Amelie's waltz and Comptine d autre come to mind. For jazz you could try the score to the Terminal, by John Williams. If I remember correctly, there is a jazz piano piece inside. I forgot if it's a solo or not.

Michael Nyman's The Piano "The Heart Asks Pleasure First". Magnificent piece and I'm sure the score could be easily found on the net. Yes this piece is very nice, so nice that I'm gonna look for the score now and practice it!

There is a book of pieces from the Harry Potter Series that are quite nice

There's a nice, but quite short, piano piece from The Corpse Bride, 'Victors Solo', but it is quite simple to play, so i don't know if thats what you are looking for. The piano duet is also nice, it is quite easy to tweak it a little so you can play both parts, but again its quite short! They are written by Danny Elfman.

Hehe, Amelie and Forrest Gump are both pieces that I have learned, seems I have good taste ;)

I recommend playing Clair de Lune, it was used at the end of Ocean's Eleven.

thanks for all the suggestions! my performave was yesterday and i forgot i posted this topic lol:P i ended up playing the pharlap theme by bruce rowland... it's quite a nice peice of music if anyone was looking for something new to play

Pick just about anything by Debussy and you can't go wrong. I saw Claire De Lune mentioned above. Great piece. But I prefer his Arabesque No. 1. If you are looking for something a little more traditional, then there is Beethoven's Romance in F Major. My favorite Beethoven piece. :)

maybe not 'anything'. his works are difficult to get around 'fingering' wise.

True. I don't like *everything* by Debussy (I don't care for some of his later piano work). But he didn't really specify a level of difficulty. :D

Well, there's the pretty famous flying bag tune from American Beauty. I think it's called "Any other name" in the soundtrack. It's beautiful and technically easy.
